ive been looking for a daily hack for a while now having sold my 205.

ive been offered a C reg Volvo 740 GL 2.3 n/a (saloon)

are these any good??? im lead to belive theyre excellent, however the only thing thats putting me off is that carb'd 2.3 lump. (i think its carbd's anyway) am i going to need to join OPEC to fuel the ruddy thing or shouldnt it be too bad?

im already aware of the reliability and longevity these machines can offer and its extremely cheap and in very good nick with very nice red velour!!! i must admit im very tempted, but just need convincing!

My 740 C Reg 2.3 GL was the estate. It was fuel injected, and had overdrive on 4th. Used to get 34 mpg out of it. Did 320,000 miles before getting another one.

Pretty bulletproof. I have a fuel injected 2.3 and its bulletproof and very easy to work on and not as bad on fuel as you may believe (300-330 miles to £50 on a steady run)

I ran a 740 GLE (2.3 injected non turbo) for 6 months commuting to central London from Ashford (Kent).

The only thing that went wrong in 17,000 miles was the coil failed.

I averaged between 28 & 29 to the gallon, no matter how hard or soft I drove it. smile

Go for it ! thumbup

The carbs are fine - just find a garage who knows what they're doing with one - Sadly most garages don't know how to set em' up anymore - We often get older volvo's in running like st because other people have buggered up setting up the carb

As for the 740's - great untilitarian motor - injection models are better but the carb models are fine

Edit - You used to be able to buy Volvo R-sport manifolds to convert them to run on twin 40's
