Last Friday I appear to have made a rather big mistake by getting the Mrs a P2 V70R. Its a 55 plate 6 speed manual and I'm having a rather annoying on-going fault.
The evening I picked the car up, after about 30 minutes I noticed on the overrun at about 2300rpm it was letting out a horrible 'bang/pop' from the exhaust. Not a good little pop, but a rather loud bang, similar to my TVR but the R obviously has a turbo and cat and doesn't have the massive valve overlap the Trevor has, so I'm assuming shouldn't be doing this and is probably doing damage.
To go along with this, the next day the 'Engine system service required' message came on with the orange engine management light. Got it to Volvo who diagnosed MAF or inlet Air leak.
I should say, when this came on, the car started driving like a dog. Under full load it didn't seem bad, but under partial loads it was horrible to drive with hesitations all over the rev range.
So one new MAF later, fault codes cleared and all seemed fine whilst driving back from the dealer. Few hours later I went to start the car and guess what? Yup. Fault back and car now driving like a dog again. Dealers were very good and got it in straight away, this time telling me it was likely the ETM playing up. Fair enough go ahead and sort it.
New ETM fitted, old MAF back on and codes cleared, all was good again. (refunded for labour and new MAF which I thought was good of them) Anyway, got home same as before, left the car for a while and hey presto, exactly the same again...
They want the car for a while now to do some more 'tests'. They did say the VVT pulley? Was leaking pressure when parked up and needed replacing, (You can hear a rattle for a few seconds on start-up – they tell me that's what this is) but they said it shouldn't be throwing up this error message. This is being sorted as its annoying but if that's not causing the problem, does anyone have any ideas?
I get the feeling they're just going to be throwing parts at it and hoping for the best until its fixed.
Not a good start to ownership. But its a very pleasant car apart from this (still think I prefer my P1 R) but maybe when its not being such a massive pain the arse I'll change my mind
Any ideas guys? I've tried to post on t5d5 but it's taking forever to be granted permission to post.

Hello Chris, sorry to hear about the problems with the R, are you still based somewhere in the South West because if so, I'd seriously recommend getting the car to MRG Volvo in Chippenham. They've been looking after my S60R and there's now a fair number of P2 S60R / V70R owners who take their cars there for fault diagnostics, general maintenance etc. MRG really are very good and have been excellent with my car, which has done over 5000 track miles in the last year alone (Castle Combe, Silverstone, Goodwood, Nurburgring etc.) I'm on T5D5 too so do join us over there as its now pretty much the most performance oriented Volvo forum in the UK, with a wide variety of expertise. The evening I picked the car up, after about 30 minutes I noticed on the overrun at about 2300rpm it was letting out a horrible 'bang/pop' from the exhaust. Thanks guys,
I'll give MRG a bell on Monday if Oxford Volvo can't fix the problem, they've been pretty good at getting it in straight away, but bit gutting when you're nearly £500 down and still have the same fault
I would be cautious with Motorworld Oxford. Just last week, they quoted someone I know £3000 to replace 2 comeplete hub assemblies and wheels because they could not get 2 locking wheel nuts off. I told the guy to get a snap on socket (which is a well known remedy) and he had the locking wheel nuts off in under 5mins. I've had horrendous experiences with them too.I'll give MRG a bell on Monday if Oxford Volvo can't fix the problem, they've been pretty good at getting it in straight away, but bit gutting when you're nearly £500 down and still have the same fault
