Hi everyone, My first post in a while - back for a bit of advice please!

I'm thinking of changing Mrs J's car and the XC90 is top of the shopping list. We're looking for something that’s good for general use (school run, shopping, lugging stuff around) but also really smooth and really comfortable on long motorway journeys with the kids in the back.

We’ve compared various 4x4s (X5, Cayenne, Range Rover, etc) and decided that we prefer the XC90 but is a 4x4 the right choice for the above use or should we be looking at estate cars like a V70, BMW 5 series, Audi A4 etc, etc.

If you think an XC90 is the right choice, with a budget of approx £30k, which model and which engine would you recommend with an automatic gearbox?

Has there been a recent change of shape or facelift and if so, when was that?

Any other words of advice would be appreciated...

30k will get you in to a brand new XC90 D5 or 3.2 petrol with the current offers on the table at the dealers. Volvo West London have just done a great deal for my Dad on an XC60, but he could have bought an XC90 (with a higher retail price) for less money.

The facelift was 2007 model year with a slightly better dash, new/revised engines, new lights, bumpers etc.

The 18" wheel cars (SE, SE Lux) have a better ride and turning circle than the Executive and R Design.

The D5 is a bit noisy around town, but fine on a run, the 3.2 is very smooth (this engine was also meant to go into Jags before Ford sold them) but will depreciate more. A used V8 will also be in your budget.

We are going for an XC90, kids, luggage etc. Forget the A4 if you want space - they are not big enough. We've had one for 4 years, rear leg room and boot are both pretty dire. If you are going for new you can get 9-10k off the list price no problem.

Have you considered buying a used Petrol Xc90 with low miles and getting it converted to run on LPG. you would then have performance with great MPG equiv.
If you do get the flash Lube added when converting, saves on problems later. I had a LPG converted XC90 for 2 years and never had any problems

Thanks for the replies. Sounds like we might be able to get a new one on our budget so I'll have to pop down to the local dealer...

I was in the Volvo dealers last week looking at XC60s and 90s; the salesman was telling me that there are some serious deals on XC90s at the moment as there will be a facelift out soon to bring it's interior up to the level of the XC60.

Really?

Rumour is its not going to be replaced/updated - maybe it is.

30% off was what I was offered off list price (approx)

DTD say £22k for the D5 Active with geartronic - is it better than that?
Not far off 22k but for a manual with mettalic and service pack (I have trade in so DTD cant match that figure)

Are you buying or Lease/PCP?

Manual is pretty much death for these, beware if it's your own money!
Dont really see it as a risk TBH

Its on a PCP - Plus the manual offers more MPG and control which for me swings it.

The GFV wasnt anything much more with geartronic and after one box failure on a 06 V70 I would rather not get auto again.

I've asked about LPG on an XC90 before (on here) and was told the spare wheel well was too shallow, so does that mean you've got a big tank in your boot?

Drive the deal doing a new XC90 D5 Active solid paint for £20990. Tempted to replace our Mazda MPV and to sit beside well loved V50 2.0D SE Lux. Volvo doing 3 year servicing for £300 too.

Drove the XC90 today - SE Auto D5.

Very nice, bigger than used to obviously, managed 31mpg driving like I normally do so the manual would offer me slightly better.

Liked the space, feel and family orientated way it does business - and it had that sense you were in something a bit different.

I didnt like the cabin as much - the plastic and feel isnt as good as my V70 or the handbrake process.

With the deal thats on offer its still really tempting, its just a case of whether I want to risk financing the vehicle.

I went to the local dealer at the weekend. As pointed out on this thread there are some great deals on the XC90 at the moment. The reason is that next year its going to get a few changes to bring it into line with the XC60; new interior, new exterior, more engine choice, better spec, more optional extras. I'm now wondering if its a false economy to take the deal on the current car when its going to be out of date so soon and thats bound to hit its residual value. I'm now thinking about going for a 56 / 07 reg XC90 or simply waiting for the new shape to come along. Thanks for all the advice!

Only seems to be offers on the Active that are strong at the moment.

I have spoken to three different dealers all of which have said Volvo dont have plans to do anything to the XC90 and given they could of sold me XC60 on that basis took them at face value.

Is there anyway to find out direct from Volvo - doesnt worry me too much as managed to improve the offer to the point where its the same price as a normal family estate!

My view is that when a new one comes out (if it does) the prices will go right back to RRP and stay there.

When the last Seat Cupra Leon was run out I bought the Tdi FR+ amongst forums claiming depreciation would be rapid on the older version when new shape was out.

I got a discount similar to this on the run out edition and sold it 12months later for the same price I paid for it with 15k on the clock. This was because Garages viewed the RRP at the time of purchase not the discounted price, so they thought I was taking a hit.

Horses for courses really - will a couple of k saving now give you the peace of mind a new vehicle will?
