V70 d5 auto box 185 v 163
Discussion
Did the D5 switch from 163 to 185 in early '05? I think it also got a 6 speed auto rather then the old 5 speed at the same time?
Might be worth trying to find a newer one if you can as I believe the older auto box can be troublesome and the newer ZF box is far nicer.
That said, if you're looking for economy then the 163 (Euro 3) is MUCH better, and better still with a manual box.

One reason there will be a big spread in price, is because in 2007 they brought out a new V70...people on here refer to them as being phase 3 or something.
Over the last few years (not sure when exactly) the 163bhp version has been called the 2.4D and the 185bhp version has been called the D5. I've got the last of the "old shape" and it's got a 6 speed auto/tiptronic gearbox and is nippy enough and I'm happy to answer any questions you may have

Cheers - a friend has one and I was pretty impressed with it. His is 163 on the log book but has the grey engine cover which I'm told means its 185 bhp. He tells me the front sway bar might signal a problem if it moves excessively when pushed by hand. Other than injector issues (4k bill from volvo?) I'm aware of little else. Fire away.

if his is 2005 or newer and marked as a 2.4D rather than a D5 then it will be a 163bhp. They are an identical engine, just mapped differently! Both can be remapped to about 210bhp.smartie said:

55 plate Martin but with a grey engine cover. I looked at one on here a while ago and did an insurance check by entering the reg, it said it was a 163 but phoning volvo themselves should the car to be 185. Wierd. The auto box is the main factor for me as I want the 6 speed one.Upto approx 2005 (from approx 2002) the D5 came with 163bhp nb black engine cover.
Upto approx 2007 (from approx 2004) came in 163 and 185bhp nb grey engine cover. Former called 2.4D and latter D5. The new Phase 3 V70 was introduced with the same engine(s) on "57" plate.
Post 2009 they come in 175 and 205bhp and are still called 2.4D and D5. The latter is now a sequential turbo. A 2.0D was also introduced.
RELY ON THE TAILGATE BADGE AT YOUR OWN PERIL!
Cannot comment on the geartronic box as only ever purchase manuals.
If you are buying privatley - go for a late 2004 D5 with the EuIII engine and add a chip. My opinion is based on owning every variant of a V70 with a diesel engine except the MY2010 with 205bhp but there again I am toying with buying one
Think you may have to purchase an EuIV if after the 6-speed auto.

I am just about to sell my V70 D5 - 06 plate so is Euro IV 184 BHP and 6 speed auto.
Great car, shifts when needed, gearbox was replaced two months ago under warranty but apparently its a rare issue on the newer autos.
With 20% loyalty reduction on a new car going to stick with the marque

Many thanks guys, brill info.
Out of interest what issues did you have with your box for it needing replacing? Also if you want to mail me more details on spec / colours / options and how much you might want for it I may be interested. Send a pm, ta.

Will send a PM separate - it first started showing signs of hesitation. Then one day changing between Park and Drive it didnt engage then suddenly engaged with a huge thud.Out of interest what issues did you have with your box for it needing replacing? Went to garage and they consulted Volvo - outcome was that the box isnt serviceable (its sealed) so replacement was only option.
New box is much better.

I agree, decently quick, if no sports car (handling wise) and nice and comfy.Great car, shifts when needed, gearbox was replaced two months ago under warranty but apparently its a rare issue on the newer autos.

What was the hesitation? From moving off, did it happen overnight, or gradually get worse? I've got the same engine and gearbox set up, on a 57 plate. Out of interest, what sort of economy are you getting?

Halo 34 - push for more eg 3 years inclusive service deal.
If you go for an XC60 then the discount falls to 15%.
If going for a D5 make sure it is MY 2010 i.e 205bhp.
Know a chap who does great deals if you need his details.
Yes please can you email it over - the local dealer is sticking to the 20% but hasnt yet given me the trade in price for mine. I suspect they will wipe out the 20% by bidding low on the car.If you go for an XC60 then the discount falls to 15%.

I am thinking of going with the V50 this time because frankly I haven't used the V70 in all its capacity and the family fit in the V50 fine.
It is a bit big sometimes, but I have to say the new V70 D5 engine is very appealing.

It was the odd pauses changing gear, then engaging between Park and Drive - then about two weeks before they replaced it if you reversed the engine revs used to fall and rise as if it was having trouble staying engaged.
Also if you switched it into manual mode it would clunk hard between 5th and 6th when you put it under load. Not all the time but when it happened it was painful !
PS - It has a towbar fitted by the previous owner, I suspect that to be the culprit in regards to the box. Reading various forums, its not keen on towing without cooling so that may explain its early demise. The new one is much smoother and holds torque much better.

I get near that if I'm keeping it under 80 on the motorway, but I'm currently mainly urban stuff and so its nearer 30....which isn't great, but its a big heavy lump.
I'd like a V50 with the D5 engine in, as I think that would plenty quick enough and as you say, sometimes the V70 is just a big old bus....especially when it's a bit of tight parallel parking!
I've been running an S60 D5 (185) with 6-spd Geartronic for two years now. Cracking motor car - of its type. No sports car but decently quick when you want it to be and a brilliantly comfy mile-muncher. The D5 sounds quite nice too. Not up to V8 standards, of course, but a different throatiness without any obtrusive diesel clatter. Over two years and 28k miles it has returned an overall average of a smidgin over 36mpg. 1700 mile Euro trip, (incl some Swiss valley fun and Autobahn glee), pulled in 40.1mpg. All mpg is done on actual fill-ups.
My only gripe is the less than brilliant lock/turning circle, (same on V70, I think). Other than that..............a much under-rated car that's been kept quite a secret.

Perfectly summed up....yes it might not handle quite as good as a 5 series, but I think you'd only notice when really pushing on....and honestly, how often day to day do most people drive their cars to the n(th) degree? My only gripe is the less than brilliant lock/turning circle, (same on V70, I think). You'd be pushed to find a better sounding diesel (?!?!) engine.
And you're right, it has a fairly poor steering lock, but that's my only real niggle with the car
