Does anyone have any experience with these?

I'm doing so many miles that i'm considering selling the V70 R and buying one. It'll probably be an older version with high mileage as i'll only have the money from the R but i wondered how reliable the d5 is?
Any advice would be great.

My D5 has just let go on the XC90 showing 130k on the clock, turbo went first then it appears has starved the engine of oil, total bill 4K.

I'm just coming up to the 100k mark in mine with no problems at all (never done so many miles in one car before!). Main stealer servicing was a tad expensive though. I average 42-45mpg on my commute and love the car, it makes a wonderful noise which was a major contributing factor in buying it as I never thought I'd buy a Volvo.

Thanks for the info guys.

Phil Dicky - Sorry to hear about your car.

Unfortunately i've found it doesn't matter whether your car is a BMW 5 Series, Mondeo, Vectra, Passat or Volvo if its got a turbo diesel under the bonnet there's always the risk of turbo/engine problems. Other than having a warranty i'm not sure what else you can do to prevent anything happening.

I'm going to look into selling my R i think and see if i get any interest. If i do, then i'll definately look at the S60 as a replacement then as i really need a D5 or equivalent now.

Your right mate, just bad luck on my part, was expecting it to last 200k plus and it should do too.

Sorry Phil, i know it doesn't make things any easier mate.

It hasn't put me off buying one though, as i really need a diesel either way, so I've decided to advertise my V70 R and look to buy an S60 D5.

ABU, sorry to hear your considering getting rid of the R.
Can't comment on how reliable the D5 engine is.

Have you considered our generation V70 Tdi.

Yes it maybe old now, and yes its not fast.

But, they are seriosuly reliable. like SERIOUSLY! And not too bad on fuel if your going to be using it on the Mway.

I did a 600mile roundtrip to Manchester last week. I averaged 54mpg on the way up in normal 65-70mph traffic.

I don't think that's too bad for a 12year old car with an even older engine design!

Good luck with ther search and possible sale frown

Ensure you buy a Euro III and not IV as the latter are approx 15% inferior on MPG.

If you can stretch to a 2004 car - get a facelift version.

Well looked after and regularly serviced they just keep going.

17" alloys look good but ride can be a bit choppy. Do not even bother with 18" unless you have chiro/dental.

Cars upto 2002 suffered from injector issues - most should have been rectified under warranty?

Heaps of good examples to choose from.

Better than the German A4/3series/VW "me too" equivalents wink

Cheers Rich. Thanks for the info. I think it depends if i sell the R really and what interest/price i can get for it. I don't have a lot of spare cash so its predoominantly going to be that on a replacement.

Thanks also for the info. smile Looking at the classifieds i'd love a facelift version, but i think currently its going to be out of my range, but there's nothing to say i can't upgrade to a newer version further down the line. Very useful info though, cheers! Something between 2002 and 2004 within my budget sounds about right then. smile

So, if I've got a 57 V70D5 (last of the old shape) does that mean mines a euro IV? and therefore has worse fuel consumption?

'03 model year onwards have meatier steering and handle slightly better. They also tend to feel better put together.
Avoid the sports pack cars with 18" alloys, sports suspension and a crap steering lock.

As has been said, the D5 is no better/worse than any other modern turbo diesel with regard to reliability - some do 300k, others 50k! A sensible run in the manuals returns up to 50mpg, or about 45mpg in the autos.

Try and get a warranty is my advice.

06 V70 the Euro IV version - I get 42mpg with geartronic.

Injectors replaced @ 55k
Gearbox replaced @ 70k (last week)

Cost to Volvo = 6.5k in a year!

Remap will help push the MPG up even further and improves midrange. I am keeping mine for a bit since most of its new now biggrin

ABU, it occured to me yesterday what your ARRRRR is a FWD manual in what seem(ed) like extremely good condition. I would be surprised if you didn't manage to turn a profit knowing what your bought the car for approximately.

Your not on the volvoforums are you?

Then again, some people could be put right off with its Welsh history wink

What colour is your engine cover?
  1. Grey = EuIV (note both the 2.4D and D5 have the same cover and are thus both EuIV)
  2. Black = EuIII
My EuIIIs managed low-50s all day long and upto 67mpg if I was frugal
My EuIVs are lucky to reach mid-40s

I checked this a while back...but then was under the bonnet this morning and, as I suspected, I've got a EeIV frown And you're right, if I behave myself and mainly drive on A and M roads, then 40ish is achieveable.

Took my car in for sevice this morning and I've got a C30 R design (I think) coupled with the D5 and auto gearbox. It's resonably nippy, but you have put it in tiptronic to get it to move quickly. Feels a bit tight though, but it's only done 600 miles!
It has the worst boot of any car I've ever driven though. Rubbish
