My old Saab has kicked the bucket so looking around for something cheap and interesting. There seem to be quite a few 2000-2001 C70's at about £2500 and below. Are these a good buy at these prices as they seem to be a lot of car for the money?

What are common issues with the 2.4t engine and does anyone know what insurance and tax group they are in?

tax group depends on the year of the car but a 2000 model will set you back £195 a year for tax im not to i presume by the 2.4t you mean the t5 in which case the only real issue to look out for is the throttle body make sure it has had the upgraded software done other wise you could be looking at a bill of upto £200, unless you find one that is pre me7 i.e. has a throttle cable rather than fly by wire but theyare few and far between.
£2500 isnt a bad price but dont expect to get it back on resale as my father in law just found out the most he has been offered on trade in is £1900.
all in all though great cars

I think you will find 2.4t (LPT) model as well.

The T5 is a 2.3 HPT.

The 2.4t is a nice unit, it doesn't light up the front wheels as much and is easier to live with.

If you want madness then the T5 is the one to go for. They eat front tyres but are pretty sound.

Suspension and top mounts are things to look out for....the older ones might need exhusts replacing at some point....otherwise great cars.

The 2.4t also has less lag than a T5 - the earlier motors are actually a little better but they're all reliable -

Check the fly-by-wire throttle is ok - if not haggle a bit off - they often require a clean up to make them work properly if neglected and sometimes a software update, other than that, check for oil leaks (the rear main seals can go) look in the fill cap, if there are black carbon deposites its been run on st oil and will more than likely need the breather and flame trap cleaned out/replaced

check the master cylinder is good and I find C70's like to wear out their anti-roll bar drop links (cheap to replace though)

Most the same issues that apply to the V70 apply here.

Two things - the ETM (electronic throttle) is a know issue on these motors, and they all fail at some point. Haggle £300 off it hasn't been done - you can tell if it has been replaced as the new one should have a yellow / orange Volvo replacement part sticker.

Auto boxes - the wisdom is that the oil should be changed every 40,000 miles. Volvo say sealed for life, but life to them means 100,000 miles or so. Get it changed or DIY - is an easy job.

www.volvoforum.org is a good source of info.
