Depends which series T5 V70 you're after, as the V70 is now on it's third iteration.

Front suspension and crank oil seals appear to be the main bugbear through the previous two generations.

The swedespeed forums and t5d5.org are probably better than this very quiet little corner of the internet with regards Volvo information.

Dunk is right, you may be better off asking on T5D5 or google volvo forums, as there is a big forum dedicated to volvos (T5D5 is better as most people on that bigger site dont know what there talking about).

Your after the early type which I can help you with as I have a M reg 850 T5 ;-)
mines got over 200k,history up to 150k miles and had a lot of problems which I did not realise would cost so much to fix, being good with a spanner saved me hundreds.

Manual is the best way to go,for power and reliability and costs if any thing goes wrong.

Worst thing to happen can be the cam belt snapping and bending your valves, engine will be scrap but a engine for these cars would be cheaper then getting volvo to replace a clutch!!

Clutch alone costs 150 pluss and volvo charge silly money, average garage would charge 150-200 for labour as it is a mission to get to the clutch.

If your good with a spanner,I would replace the cam belt asap,as for what to look at for,
Blue smoke from exhaust (worn turbo)if your good with a spanner a 50 pound refurb kit will sort it or simply buy a used turbo for 70-80 quid and replace it.A refurb shop will charge you silly money and if you do bump in to onw with blue smoke (dont dis miss it),just buy another turbo and replace it,average garage shouldnt chare much and to be honest it is easy enough for you to do your self.

Head gasket is another thing on these as it could mean you nee a new/used head as they deform from the heat.

I tip from me,dont go to volvo for any thing unless you cant get it any where else, look at paying 5x more for parts or servicing from volvo, early regs like mine (M reg) have on board diagnostic, volvo will charge you silly money to have fault codes read.

These cars are good up to 400k miles, looked after right and I would not buy or look for one with volvo history as the only major thing they do that you cant is the cam belt 70-80k miles and the service book wont say whats been done at so and so miles.

As long as it drives well,no knocking,no excessive smoke, buy, dont pay over the odds for service history, although good to know your car may or may not have been looked after,it does not mean it is worth the extra money (most that history will be oil changes and greasing, which average mechanical minded person can do)

Just watch out for head gasket and clutch is my opinion, all other things can be done cheap enough and way cheaper if your good with a spanner (not even good,if you can undo and do up bolts, you can service and replace most parts).

Buy one and stick a bleed valve.manual boost control between the boost control valve and the turbo, you will love it!!!just as good as a ecu re map and only cost 20-50 quid.

A good forum for Volvos is http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/ A bit more active then T5D5.org.

Watch out for 2000-2002 cars with a poor idle/throttle response. The ETM wears out on them. They cost £700 or so to replace. I think the news ones have a yellow sticker on them.

Rear door locks that pop up after being locked need replacing at £120 or so each.

I'm picking up a V70 T5 on wednesday.

Early V70's are pretty good, only issues I've had are just recently on our now 200k 2.4 20v example:

Window switches that do odd things.
Front lower arms clonking & general wandering £70 a side & an easy fix.
Leaky power steering rack (but a shot rubber boot was the cause)

Most of the elctrics are Denso which is a bonus, Japanese electronics in a Swedish tank can't be bad.
