What are the differences between the 850 T5 and the T5-R?
Also noticed there are R models that aren't T5's too, ranging from 225-250bhp. Which is the best?
Im after a car for a trip to the Nurburgring next year that will get me there quickly, reliably & comfortably, and be a good laugh round the track, aswell as a few trackdays over here & the odd run at santa pod.
Im considering the 850 T5/T5R saloon or estate along with a few others and any help would be greatly appreciated.

To answer your qiestion(i'll try)

T-5's have 225hp and come in a variety of colours and ranges(top is the CD spec)
T-5R's are a limeted edition and have 225hp,and with an overboost funtion(35secs,i believe)240hp.

These cars are full option.(17" titans,leather/alcantara upholstery,ecc,etc),only availeble in 3 colours(black,yellow(gull),olive green)all mettalics(pearl)

R's were the latest version(to simplify an uprated T-5R)thes have 240hp(auto)and250hp(manual)
Come in more colours(dark grey,black,green,white(rare)and 1 more(don't remember)also mettalics.
Not allways full option(buyers choice)but do have the bumpers of the T-5R,leather/alcantara(other way ruond),ecc, tracs and 17"Volans

Hope this helps a bit.

For the ring if poss. i would go for either one,as long as it is a manual.

yes mate, i've got 850r and they are the uprated version of the t5r. they are beautiful cars, engines are bulletproof, hardly any rust issues, very well equiped for 12-13 year old cars. be sure to check a/c and sun roof , also the electrics and abs light. though mine is perfect (not the a/c) these are the usuall comon faults.
The manuals are a little rare 2 come by, but have the extra 10hp.
Good luck,

As has been stated, its well worth a look over on www.t5d5.org, home of both the genuinely proven fastest Volvo 850 (12.9 @ 117mph) and Volvo T4 (13.82 @ 110.3mph) in the UK wink

T5D5 is also the UK’s only Volvo performance oriented forum which does not accept paid advertising from any garage owner / tuning company, and as such has no vested interest in allowing any business to post with impunity.

If you're after info about trips to the Nurburgring or trackdays etc., that would definitely be the place to enquire as there have already been 2 organised group trips to the Nurburgring, the next is planned for November this year, and there are Volvo owners there who regularly do track days and have taken their cars for several thousand miles of track driving in the last 12 months alone! smile

As T4RRR has mentioned T5D5 is an excellent forum where you will find many experienced Volvo owners who regularly drive on track - there are some very knowledgable members on T5D5 who are particularly enthusiastic about improving their cars' performance.

The majority of enthusiasts read all the Volvo focussed forums - after all the many owners want to share their experiences and help others or get advice about their cars - this is clearly evident when it comes to the organised trips to the Nurburgering on T5D5 where I'm sure some of the more experienced members would be more than happy to help and advise about what car/equipment is suitable and relay experiences of going to the "Ring".

As far as the differences in the 850 here's some additional information that I hope that you find useful - the manual 850R had an uprated engine (to the 850 T-5 and 850 T5-R) with uprated con-rods with a (Volvo's own words) "spluttered" coating which meant that they were stronger than the old T-5. The manual is 250 bhp and the automatic 240 bhp. The manual 850R has a 16T turbo and a viscous coupling LSD (the Limited Edition T5-R had a 15G turbo and no LSD). Don't discount the newer 70 series - the S70R and V70R has the newly uprated engine of the manual 850R; the manual has an 18T turbo, the automatic a 16T; the manual has an LSD - the same as the manual 850R. The advantage of the 70 series Rs is that they have uprated 302 front brakes which are better than the 280s which the 850 T-5R and 850R had as standard. The Classic 70 series that I have discussed was manufactured from 1997-1998. There were later V70Rs (the last Classic V70R had 265 bhp is an AWD and was only produced as an automatic and is generally associated with the lazer blue colour although it was produced in other colours).

I hope that you find what you are looking for!

Im currently driving an S70 T5 auto and they are a majorly impressive car.Fantastic build quality very smooth with that lovely 5 cylinder growl and deceptively quick too.

I actually bought mine as a stopgap whilst I look for an estate (V70/850) and will sell mine as soon as I find one.

Make sure you check the rad expansion tank for sludge as the oil coolers leak. The oil cooler is integral to the radiator so you have to change it out.

Walter is spot on although the non-limited run last of the line 850 "R" was different to the T5-R

The auto version of the R was the same engine (240bhp overboost) but the manual had a bigger TD05 turbo and a LSD so you get 250bhp.

A standard T5 can be easily chipped for about 150quid to run the 240bhp map - The premium of the T5-R is not really worth it in my opinion - the performance is only marginally better than a T5 and like I say you can chip them anyway. As for spec a T5 CD will have the same toys except for slightly nicer seats, the front spoiler and 17" alloys

Still got my T5 CD and was going to flog it after a month or two but 4 months later I still have it because I dont know what to replace it with. Its fast, quiet, comfortable with an outstanding stereo.Im considering getting some new alloys for it and keeping it a bit longer.

Rare as hens teeth. A good R is hard to find, let alone in that colour!
