Hi Guys, Just been trying to help a friend start his Volvo but its dead. Its an 04 2.4 Petrol V50 Automatic. Left it for about 3-4 hours yesterday afternoon, came back and it was dead. Sems like the battery went flat as the remote locking would not work. He put some jump leads on to get some charge in the battery but when you turn the Key, absolutely nothing, Just a little whine from underneath like the fuel pump. Does the battery going flat reset any computers?? I am wondering if the car does not realise it is in Park so will not start. Any help much appreciated. Cheers

Have you checked the connections on the starter motor? They're quite prone to disconnection on the 5 cylinder engine.

There are two - one for the solenoid that engages the starter, one for the main power feed that actually turns the thing over. If the solenoid one is okay you'll hear a "click" from the engine bay when you turn the key, otherwise it'll be silent.

Unplugging and reconnecting them a couple of times usually clears any muck/crud off them enough to at least get the car going if they're dirty and not just loose.

I'm not sure how similar the V50 will be, but here's where it is on my S60:

In this section of the engine bay...

... down under the pipes.

You can just see the white tag where I'm pointing, which IIRC is the solenoid wire, the main live is just beyond that and more underneath the starter motor toward the cambelt end of the engine.

I hope that helps and Volvo haven't put things in completely different places between the two models!

i have to ask the obvious first when you put the jump leads on did you use the fob to open the car or had it already been opened by turning the key in the lock if so try locking and unlocking it on the fob it may well just be something simple like the imobiliser is still on
