I have a 2000 (New shape) V70 T5 SE, unfortunately it has a problem. A couple of months ago it developed an erratic Idle and then the emissions light came on. I took it to the local Garage who diagnosed a Lambda sensor and when this did not cure it also replaced the Mass air flow meter. A day later and the light is back on, I investigated on the net myself and spoke again to the garage and suggested that it might need the throttle housing clearing out as this seems to be a problem, this they duly did and again it ran fine for 100 miles or so, then on comes the light again. Back in the garage they suggest replacing the throttle module and once they had spoken to the Local Volvo dealer said it would probably be better to take it to the main dealer as it would also need a software update. In it went and the Main dealer asks if I want them to diagnose the problem, for which they would relieve me of £85, I explained that as it had already been diagnosed else where that they were just to replace the module, which they did but this did not cure the problem. Back to the original garage who said that the codes are still for the throttle module fitted by the main dealer, the main dealer says “not our problem as we did not diagnose the problem”. So I bite the bullet and get the main dealer to diagnose and they tell me that it needs a rear lambda sensor and possible the cat replacing, I get them to replace the sensor but it’s still not right and they are only 90% sure a cat will cure the problem. They want £720 to replace the cat; I know I can buy one myself for half that figure. I have tried cat cleaner but again this has not helped. I want to be sure that if I replace the cat this will cure it. Can any one give me any advice?

This sounds like the ETM issue - gets all 00-02 cars if I recall correctly. You need a new throttle body unit.

Thanks for the responce, however the throttle body has been replaced, still have the same problem. I was told if it was the cat to take it for a thrash, I did this and discovered it wont rev past 5000 rpm ! any other ideas or am I into a cat ?

Has it been properly coded (ie: by a main dealer)?

Hi, not too familiar with the T5, however I have had this issue with some 940`s in the past. Turned out to be the idle valve sticking in all cases. I took it off, washed in out with fuel, good as new.

Also what pressure are you getting from the tailpipe, has one of the boxes collapsed internally blocking of the escape of air?, may expain poor idle and inability to rev...

Would the same apply if the cat was blocked ?

erm, yes as the cat is part of the exhaust system. Also worth checking the fuel filters as well, can give similar syptoms, although this would be more obvious at high revs than low

Agreed, as I said in my first post, these have caused me all the engine faults to date with the engine. I think its more frequent these days with the lack of lead in the fuel, as the lead would have lubbed the valve one upon a time.

Possible Cam sensor problem - Have you had an ODBII diag done on it? where you based?

Forgive my ignorance but what is a ODBII Diagnostic ? I am not sure if it has been done, a blocked Cat was diagnosed by the main dealer and I guess they must of run a full diagnostic. I am located on the Leicestershire / Northamptonshire boarder.

So with the blocked cat identified, is it sorted now?

To be honest I was planning to sell the vehicle, the main stealer wanted £722 to fit a cat, I know I can get one from ebay for £360 but having already layed out to find the problem I am not really prepared to spend any more. I will advertise it and mention in the advert that it needs a cat and that I have the diagnosis in writing from the main dealer. The car is a 2000 on a W plate so it slips under Gordon Browns high band of tax due to its age, has only done 78000 miles so I figure if I list it on ebay starting at £3500 it should sell even needing a cat, if I am lucky I could get a bit more.

You can get them for under £200 just google for them.

Its your car, but if it were mine I would be sorting the problem out, then selling. Not many folks would want a car that has issues even if you told them what they are and a fully sorted car would be far easier to sell as well.

As I say its your car in the end, just my opinion.

I would tend to agree with you, however having already replaced 2 lambda sensors, mass air flow meter, throttle module etc I really dont want to spend any more. Cats for the Mrk 1 V70 T5 are available for under £200 but I have trawled the net and cant find a new one or a Mrk 2 for under £314 + VAT

I'd get a second opinion from a specialist before you go and sell it - Volvo Dealers don't know their arse from their elbow.
