I just heard from my dealer that it's now definitely gone. So I was wondering if anyone has an idea, where one could source one for less than the ~£4500 the dealer is quoting for it? It's simply not economical putting a new one in, which is worth more than the car is ever likely to fetch.

Am in the London area. As it stands the car is semi mobile but they will change the oil, which might aid in the issue for a short while - hopefully long enough to get it sorted elsewhere cheaper.

Any help much apprecated!

The mechanic is not quite sure - saying it's the selector mechanism, which fries the gearbox oil - but he also admitted that this is possibly but a symptom of a deeper problem.

In terms of driing behaviour the first indication of something wrong happened some months bac when my mom failed to get it out of park. She turned the car off and on a couple of times and then managed to engage D, finally. They had it checked out at the dealer, who found nothing untoward but showed me how to disable the block, if it happens again. Then I drove it for about 1500 miles after that (the car was freshly serviced), when it dropped from 4th into 3rd unexpectedly on a highway and stayed that way. After a minute the gearbox warning came on. Drove it back home (40 miles or so) and eventually to a garage. On the way home the pattern was that it would use gears 1-3 normally but not get into 4th anymore. If you drove in 3rd for 5 or so minutes, it would no longer downshift, even when you came to a complete standstill. If you switched the engine off and restarted, the first 3 gears were again available. It would work fine in manual mode in the first 3 gears, not the fourth, and if you had it in auto, it got stuck in third, then manual mode would not help.

It was then some 7 miles to the garage and the first 6 it was fine - almost like described. For the last mile of the 6 it even got 4th gear back - but only in manual mode. The final mile was a pain. Several traffic lights meant a start from standstill and it seemed that the torque converter was slipping quite heavily - hardly managed to get away from the lights. In any case, managed to get it to the garage. And today came the surprise message.

The mechanic said that the gearbox oil was in very poor shape - which surprises me, since it was changed less than 10k miles ago, brned and that he felt there was debris inside. He'll change the oil and thinks it could be a short term fix to get it somewhere, where a cheaper alternative to a brand new gearbox could be contemplated.

I checked some standard gearbox sites and am awaiting for responses. Any other advice is much appreciated!

I'd get a second opinion just to be sure

Agree about the second opinion but my problem is that at the moment the car is not very mobile - i.e. not sure if it can drive even 5 miles. On top of that I do not know how much more (irreversible) damage could be done by driving it further, before a fix?

if it's that bad and a second opinion sounds worthwhile or has potential I'd be contacting a small one man recovery / towing operator to get it lifted from/to wherever.

Other than that you'll be rapidly approaching basket case scenario. It's clear the dealer is unsure you need a specialist in the make and/or auto transmissions, preferably the latter imo.

Managed to get a quote from S and Y Motors for £1265 including fitting. For £80-100 they will come and pick it up and transport it to their own location. So it seems like it's sorted, and there is a 12 month guarantee on the gearbox as well. smile

Thanks a lot!

And thereby could be the root of your problem - these particular auto boxes need to have JWS3309 spec oil NOT "Dexron" type ATF. Use of "Dexron" will cause serious damage to the transmission.

Still you seem to be on the way to getting it "sorted" now - best of luck
