I like having a spare car for the tip and scratting around etc. My pals letting a Volvo 740 estate go for £250.

Theyve had it from new
88 E plate
60K miles
FSH
Good Cond
No tax or Mot although I cannot see any probs here
Good tyres
a bit of rust
Leather trim, aircon, fully loaded etc
Not sure of the model but knowing them its probably top of the range.

Initially it seems OK but its gonna cost £300 to insure, £200 to tax, £100 to mot If nothing to wrong plus £250 to buy. So very easily it could cost a grand to get it rolling. Im kinda tempted but I could probably get a passat est or something with a bit of T&T for £500.

What do you all think???

with out a doubt a very good choice - what engine is it? the 2.0 injection is a great engine. They are super tough cars - and knife and fork simple to fix and work on - biggest problems with them: fuel senders fail meaning the fuel gauge stops working (and there is no low fuel warning light IIRC) and head linings sag - They make a great snotter, quicker than you think and RWD for fun! - great in the winter - excellent in snow with a great heater and heat seats!

Where you based? I could arrange for the "Volvo Guru" to come along and have a look to see if its a good un'?

What this man said. Fuel gauges never work due to the senders being all over the shop usually. The gauge in my recently purchased £120 saloon works sometimes tongue out thats the best I can hope for untill the weather gets warmer and i can fix it!

Headlining is purely cosmetic but aagain always sags and rips. Its more or less gone in my estate now, the amount of times ive had a full load up to the roof means the headling is going to cop it sooner rather than later.

2.0 and 2.3 litre engines both bulletproof. 2.0 quite a bit slower than the 2.3 (I have both) but either way, just keep them topped up with oil, water and petrol, and they will run for thousands of miles with minimal maintenence.

Any more questions, just ask!
