I think it's (based on?) Audi's old in-line 5 cylinder 2.5 diesel from the '90s 100 and A6.

They have a good rep from what I know. Not too familar with the engine I'm afriad, but seem to be pretty tough cars overall. Seats in Volvos are amongst the best around.

The D5 was an all new ground up design by Volvo, introduced in 2002. At the time it was one of the most advanced diesels on the market (all aluminium etc etc). Its closest relative is the 5 cylinder petrols, which are also unique to Volvo.
Good purchase!

The D5 is an excellent compromise between performance and economy.

I'm at a loss with what to replace mine with, anything significantly 'better' costs a fortune.

Yep the block is a VAG 2.5 with Volvo's own specially developed 20v head - good engine - Early 850 and V70 "TDI's" ran the 140bhp VAG engine straight out of the Audi A6. Do be aware of the cambelt on it though - I'd be looking at changing it every 50k on a D5

the VOLVO D5 engine is volvo design evolved the from N series engines.

The 5 cylinder petrols are also 100% Volvo engines

Also the Ford Focus ST and RS use volvo's 5 cylinder engines.

No biggrin
Still have it, although its ex wifeys but still maintain it. It's a cracking car really. How can a diesel engine actually sound quite good when giving it some beans. nuts
