850 2.0 to 2.5
Discussion
Our '94 850 is getting somewhat tired after 180k and the engine is not in such great health anymore. Next year I'll hopefully be getting hold of a T5 but until then i was wondering how easy it would be to change the engine from the 20v 2.0 to the 20v 2.5.
Anyone know what extra bits may be required?

None provided they are both 20v's the mounts are the same etc - ECU's and fueling will be different though - 180k and tired? I bet it just needs a damn good sort out! - The 2.0 20v is my fave 850 engine - I had 2.0 20valve Se a few years ago and rolling roading @ 152bhp - stock engine with the cam timing tuned - the book states 143bhp! it was quicker than my mates 2.5 20v to boot!

It's 'tired' in the respect that the previous owner wasn't that genned up on looking after cars, so it needs a whole new set of tapets and piston rings. The engine runs find if you ignore the sound of the tapets although that does go away once the oil is fully warm which is usually after 20 minutes of driving. I'm guessing the piston rings are shot as there are large plums of oil coming out the exhaust if the engine is rev'd above 4k. Although it only use around 1 litre of oil per 1200 miles.

The early 2.0 20v's had a tappet issues where they make an intermittent tapping whilst warming up then they shut up - Actually very common and just down to the design of the tappets e.g. nothing to worry about. Because lots of owners complained about it to Volvo, The tappets were modified in late 94 to early 95. My 94 2.0 SE used to tap like a bd until it was warm but it ran fine. As for the piston rings maybe changing to a decent oil will reduce the leakage - Shell Helix Semi Synth works really well in 850's. TBH I did have a 2.5 20v that burned oil but I just lived with it so really other than the oil change there isn't much you can do...The engine change would be simple though...morgrp said:
