S40 T5 Buying Advice
Discussion
Very difficult to give advice on a non existing car
I have no first hand experience of the Volvo s40 T4, but it shouldn't be difficult to find such information online.
Generally the s40 feels a bit too cramped for my liking, I simply can not find a comfortable driving position.
Have you looked here?

Not many have been sold and those that have are probably not PH owners.
If it's an S40/V50 that you're after, and don't mind about 20-27mpg, then it's the pick of the range.
Very torquey and sounds good. Doesn't go as well over 100mph as you'd expect (if that's important for you).
No trouble areas that I know of. Early cars with a comms pack had a battery drain problem if the on call was activated. All should be sorted now. Otherwise reliable cars from my experience.
I specced a V50 T5awd as one of my demos while I worked at volvo and it was a lot of fun on wet/icy country lanes. Very rare car.
An S60T5 would be a better buy. I expect that they are a similar/cheaper price (haven't looked), feel far more solid, feel more balanced when pressing on (lift off oversteer is available, unlike an s40/v50), are quicker and more economical (different inlet manifold and exhaust, which are compromised on the s40 because of packaging issues).
My last S60 T5 (2.4 260hp) would easily get 31-34mpg on a run and had far more top end kick than the S40. Seats are far better also
Either is good value for money at the moment and underrated as drivers tools.

Thanks for that. I'm not to bothered about the lack of kick above 100 leptons, and ceratinly aren't concerned about a lack of lift off oversteer, I find myself getting angrier with people and the generally appauling display's of driving is this country, so I'm looking for something quiet, comfortable and relaxing, but with a good bit of poke when required.
I do like the S60 as well, but don't need a car that big, and I just can't get the S40 out of my head.

With Volvo's latest small cars in T5 form you get the best of both worlds: the fine handling DNA from Ford's Focus platform combined with the benefits of Volvo's 5 pot turbo engine mated to the Volvo/Getrag M66 box and their better specced interiors.
In my view a fine choise.....which you could enhance, should you get just a shade used to the fair standard performance, just a tad with some well written software for just a few more horses and a nice high flat torque curve.....

PS. worth a check in at www.t5d5.org for some robust discussion on Volvo's 'performance' cars rather than the highly moderated contributions on the VOC site where posting of poor trader experiences is just not tollerated.....the VOC'c knowledge base is however otherwise not to be bettered.

Never heard of the s40 T5 before, and I'm pretty sure it goes under the T4 badge at least here in Sweden. Anyway, you learn something new every day.
I'm amazed that you live in Sweden and are not aware that the old S40 (T4) was replaced with the new S40 (T5) four years ago... JimexPL said:
