Hi all,

I have a T5 with the 5 cylinder turbo engine and auto box on a ‘T’ registration. The car has done me proud for the last 4 years but now I am having a few problems with it. I’m hoping someone on here has had experience with something similar and may be able to help me out.

The problem is that when cruising at normal speeds, the engine feels like it is ‘hunting’. I’m certain its not a misfire, its not as aggressive as that, it feels similar to if it was about to fun out of fuel. Its almost as if the throttle is randomly fluttering. It has not been an problem and has not ever stopped because of this, it will just carry on going, however, its not very reassuring and I’m worried that it may be harming the engine.

There is a plethora of sensors on the induction system, Does anyone have any data on them so I can begin to test these?

Some more information:

The orange ETS light on the dashboard is on and is always on. I’m assuming it’s a drive-by-wire throttle system, so something must be amiss here. Taking a stab in the dark, could it be possible that there is a positional feedback signal on the butterfly which has stopped working? Hence everything is fine at W.O.T but cruise is lumpy??

The cruise control does not work since the ETS light has been on.

If you let the car tick over, when it is cold, there is an occasional distinctive metallic ‘clink’ during which time there is a small spike on engine speed (about 500 RPM)

Spark plug colour was checked at about 4K miles looks good, plugs have been recently replaced too.

It would be very helpful if anyone knows where I can get a set of service manuals for the car?

Also, does anyone know of any good Volvo forums?

The car has been fantastic, I love it to bits and I’m reluctant to change it, its fast, handles great and looks great. I’m keen to nurse it back to full health, help please! redface)

Thanks in advance,

Scott

If the ETS light is on there will be a fault code in the ECU to tell you what the fault is. A quick google suggests that there were problems with the Mass Air Flow sensors.

I'd also have a punt that your car of your age is likely to have a throttle potentiometer, rather than a fly-by-wire system

There are a few around

Google http://www.google.co.uk/search?source=ig&hl=en...

I have had a few T5's now and a P1 V70R, like yours.

It sounds like it could be a maf porblem or you have a tired intercooler/turbo pipe or two.

sounds like it might be related to the tps/software issue:

ETA: ETM is the keyword,, http://www.vpcuk.org/forums/showthread.php?t=15622...

Might be relying on the MAF for closed loop mode in steady speed running, hence only causing problems when cruising? Purely a punt

There are many possible problems - My mechanic is a well recognised Volvo specialist and is superb at diagnosing problems - so good that the main agents often refer problems to him - there aren't many issues with T5's he doesn't know about and hasn't devleloped a solution for -

Is it an engine problem or a gearbox problem? They do suffer from a very common wiring issue on the shift solenoid in the auto gearbox thats cause them to hunt through gears and sometimes stop working altogether - most people mis-diagnose this as the solenoid itself but its actually normally the wiring and is easily fixed.

Engine Idle issues can sometimes be traced to a faulty Purge valve on the injection system causing the revs to hunt when warmed up - again, a very simple thing to replace, but can cause all sorts of maladies, poor fuel consumption, Lambda Sond light lighting up etc.

Drive by wire systems on the newer T5's are also a known problem - again he has developed a cheap solution to the issue

There are several other little issues with them it could be but it won't be anything major

Where do you live? If you're near Norwich I can introduce you to him - he's very very good - and very competitively priced too -

Take it to Volvo and get them to run a diagnostic for around $50 and ask for a print out.

then find the sensors in question on ebay and fit it or them, that's wat I'd do anyway

Couldn't get PM to work - so shameless plug here - "Motor Medic" in Norwich, 01603 488829 - He sorted another guy's 850R on here and got it running really well - had a similar problem to yours IIRC - I always have mine serviced there and have done for years and years. He's a good friend and very well respect Mechanic in the area. Give him a ring and have a chat about it
