Girlfriends mum has a 4x4 Volvo, think it is an XC70, sorry to be a little vague.
The turbo hose went recently and this caused the turbo to fail with a lack of oil, the turbo has been replaced but it now has another problem.
The oil is leaking from the bottom of the engine, the garage who repaired it said it was a £1000 job, the sump would have to come off and then another section and the ladder gasket need to be replaced, an engine out job.
I have only had a brief description from her mum who knows nothing about cars.
Any advice please?
What is a ladder gasket?

there is a rubber o ring that fits in the block for the turbo return pipe, usually this leaks, and looks like the ladder for the cranks is leaking, especially just after the turbo was replaced,i bet this seal has been damaged, only takes half hour to change.
