I really need a 7-seater, preferrably with the headrest DVD system to keep the kids quiet. Lots of D5 163bhp vehicles available with the DVD, but I think the newer 185 would be more suitable given the number of short and longer trips I tend to do. The T6 has the power, but is it a little too thirsty in comparison to the D5?

Am I being too harsh on the 163 bhp version?

Your thoughts appreciated....

Well the early XX90's all had the 163 engine then badged as the D5 and it sold in volumes. Having said that we now do not sell that many of the 163 2.4D, everyone now gets the 185 D5 but that may be based more on not everyone knowing the 2.4D is the old D5 in essence.

The only way you can really answer the question is to drive a 163.

Having just bought the newer V70 D5 (180 odd) and test driven the old"er" D5 163 version, I cant really say I noticed a huge difference.

If anything the newer engine seems just a smidge coarser when pressing on but that could just be me. Keep an eye on the tax bandings too, mine being a geartronic will be £300 to tax PA next year.

I always thought the 163 and 185 engines were essentially the same, just in different states of tune. I've got the 185 version in a V70 and it's pretty punchy and 90% of the time, plenty quick enough.

They are the same - the only difference is the engine mapping ie., chip tuning. With something like the RICA remapping you can get 195hp and lots more tq from the 163hp D5. I have done that and its a big improvement with better economy thrown in - see my thread on the same.

Should try the police chip for the D5 by RICA.. smile performance is not there for top end but its very free revving and the new V70 handles well on roads.

As I understand it, the 163 version is badged the 2.4d, and the 185 version as the D5. The D5 can also be chipped and that can go upto 220, plus the accompanying torque increase
