V40 Gdi... any good?
Discussion
I've been looking for a runabout with a bit of load lugging ability and I'm quite taken with the V40.
They've got plenty of toys and they're cheap and economical. The Gdi engine is supposed to be pretty powerful and good on fuel but I've heard of people having trouble with the cylinder heads coking up and throttle bodies failing and so on.
Anyway, anyone had/have one? Are they worth having and are they maintainable by a competent DIYer?
Thanks in advance.

I purchased a 2002 v40 gdi with 100k from the auctions last year for the missus . all the toys leather, satnav, cruise etc.
They seem to get a bad press but this one has been excellent . 37mpg average( town) and 42 (motorway 80/85 mph ).you can stretch to 50+if you like a steady 70 mph.
They can coke up if driven a like an old woman and rough idleing and poor performance is the giveaway. the throttle bodys need a regular clean as well.
one other thing the timing belt is a fairly expensive job and the tappets can have a slight rattle,
it seems to prefer branded fuel and does run better after a long run
ive always worked on my own cars including several volvos and found the v40 easy to work on and reliable,
ecoteck produce a decoke foam that has some good reviews
