Finally - New D5 V50 R-design. turned up
Discussion
Yup it turned up last Tues, I posted on the D5 manual toque thread, but forgot this one!!
V50 R-Design Sport D5 manual. Leather upgrade, information centre, High Performance Stereo and 6cd.
Very pleased with it, it's certainly a lot nippier than my Focus
It's done just over 600 miles now, and averaged 31.8mpg so far. I think this will improve a bit as it gets a few miles on the clock...
There's a pic on my profile, although it's only taken using my mobile, so not the best quality!

Economy has improved to 38mpg average for the last tank (up to 1100 miles now). Seems to have a good balance between ride and roll stiffness.
A bit tight getting the rear seats folded with drivers seat in my normal position, but takes a couple of mountain bikes in the back fine, which is the most I ever need to cart around.
Climate control seems pretty efficient, certainly seems capable of cooling the cabin down quicker than my Focus could.
Overall very pleased.

09 spec came out back in april or may!! Get it ordered, and if you go for the D5, get it in manual. The auto ruins it I think.
Why do you think the auto ruins it? I have to drive an auto, so am particularly interested. Also, any special reason why you chose the sport, instead of the SE? Money, or just it didnt seem worth it?
Finally, I'm sure you've already done this, but when I had to drop the seats on my old V50, I used to move my seat forward a bit to drop the seats, but then could get it nearly all the way back again afterwards...as opposed to just leaving it in situ whilst dropping the rear seats.
And to L500, it's the standard wait time I'm afraid...unless you're very lucky!
I've got an expected del. date of 27th November from the dealership, so fingers crossed it'll be on time.
Also, I personally went for the D5 Sport and not the D5 Sport SE because my company scheme didn't stretch that far. However, it seems the SE has the "information centre" which is a basic on board computer as far as I know, so I won't miss that ;-)

No offence as you have to drive an auto, but I found it sapped a lot of the performance compared to the manual version. It might just be the usual auto Diesel thing which allows the engine to rev too high when pressing on, rather than changing up and surging forward on the torque.
The handbook indicates that the manual version has more torque than the auto too (400Nm vs 350Nm) which may explain the difference I noticed.
I have found that moving the seat and then putting it back again helps, but it is a bit of an inconvenience when my Focus would let me fold the seats without removing the rear headrest or moving the drivers seat.
Overall though, very pleased with it. Done 3000miles in a month, and it is going in for the inspection service on Fri.
I went for the Sport as I didn't want to contribute any more to my company car allowance (huge jump up in rental cost for some reason that was totally out of kilter with the modest list price increase) also I prefer the 17's on the Sport. I think the ride is only just acceptable with the smaller wheels, the 18's made it a little too hard and are also a lot more fiddly to clean! Other bits of kit I wasn't too worried about such as auto wipers.

Haven't driven a D5 manual but if it's the same effect as on the T5 then in my view it appears to sap the performance but in practice it is a very marginal effect, e.g. fractions of a second in measured times. I reckon it's just the torque converter giving the usual different feel to the drive train, the different experience with engine note changes and speed changes enhance the effect.
Just my 2p fwiw.

I agree with plfrench (no offence taken) and FIF. I expect that a slight reduction in torque would have an effect on the performance. However, its more likely that as you say, it sometimes rev's to the red line in an auto, as opposed to sticking in the torque/powerband.
When I want to overtake someone (especially on an A road) then 90% of the time I flick it across into manual mode so that I can get it right in the power...it's great in 3rd gear.
I think auto's usually feel slower/more sluggish when you're pulling away from a standstill, but on the move, there really shouldnt be much difference. It maybe is just a case of driving in a different style, or so suit the gearbox.
