XC90... to buy or not to buy... that is the question
Discussion
Hi.
I currently drive an Audi S4 Avant, and needing a bigger boot for pram, dog etc. I've been looking at 4x4s since there aren't many bigger estates I like. (I'd love the current shape Audi S6 Avant but my budget will not stretch to it.)
Contemplating an XC90 Volvo D5 SE auto, amongst others.
Based upon your own experiences, is it a good bus or not?
I know Jeremy Clarkson seems to think it's OK... But is it GOOD?
Answers on a postcard please!

It was too slow for me. Drive it through town, try nipping out at junctions.
"Bridge to engine room more power"
"I did'n hear you captain"
"MORE POWER"
"OK, captain I'll go and get some coal"
In theory you can remap the diesel but I don't know how sucessful that is. I bet the V8 petrol is cheap at the moment. One I borrowed was showing 14mpg average on the computer. It was much quicker than the diesel but still not exactly snappy. Problem is the XC90 is such a heavy old bus.
I ended up with the XC70, almost as much space (but only 5 seats) much more economical. 25+ Petrol / LPG and quite quick. Oh and you don't get any hassle from the ecotreehuggers as to them it is just an estate car.

Love the XC90. Just changed from a Porsche Cayenne S (due to imminent arrival of 2nd & 3rd children! )."Bridge to engine room more power"

D5 was ok, but went for the T6 petrol instead. You pay a premium to buy the diesel model, then 10p a litre more at pumps. Somewhat diminishes the extra mpg. Dont miss the Cayenne at all......well maybe a little bit
When i was looking a short while ago, the V8 was £32k+ for a 6 month old. OPC now sells them at nearer £26k. Thats a 50% saving (depending on spec). Next year......

I've got one and it's great for lugging stuff around and very very comfy for doing long drives in. The drive is uninspiring at best and there is lag at junctions but you just have to preempt things a bit.
It's a big safe car and great for getting kids in and out of. The third row is easy to use and the boot is massive. It just works.

I test drove one and thought the lag at take-off was horrendous (I drive a Merc diesel auto which doesn't do that).
I also felt the car rocked from side while on the move - other SUV's I tested didn't do that.
I thought the Ford/Peugeot 2.7 V6 diesel might have found its way in there but seems not.

I have had one for the past 2 years and it is great, I have had a lot of fast cars and as other people have said it is not the quickest but it works really well. I have three kids so it was the best car for the job, I am luck I have a TVR for the days when I get out on my own.
I am just about to sell mine D5 10k miles two years old if your intrested :-), think i will get another if not a new V70.

Owned an XC90 D5 se, for 18 months now, great car,was not impressed at first with the MPG, so I added a green box purchased from www.dieseltuninguk.com
and must say that the improvement was unreal, this addition took it from 163 bhp to 194 php with an increase in tourqe of around 25%, giving me around 10% better fuel consumption. I have owned various V70's and will one day go back to them, but at the moment I am enjoying my XC90 far to much.
Go buy one you will not be disapointed.

A note of caution on the CR boxes mentioned earlier.
I had one on the wifes XC90 and when it was hot it made the engine management go into limp home mode.
Basicly it plungs inline with the common rail pressure sensor and so reduces the signal the engine ECU sees thus increasing the common rail pressure, nothing more, just cons the ECU to turn up the CR pressure.
Personaly I'd go for a RICA remap which whilst slightly more expensive, is a proper re-map of the fuel and boost maps.
All IMH expierance!
