I'm intrigued, does anyone know if the D5 manual in the V50 has more torque than the auto in the same car? The sales guy said he was told that they had put the torque back up to 400Nm when they installed the manual box. The literature claims the same 350Nm for both transmissions.

A quick google around this subject showed an autocar article from June last year which specifically mentioned that the torque had been boosted by 50Nm to the full 400Nm with the addition of the manual.

Academic really, as I found it plenty quick enough and have now ordered a V50 R-Design Sport D5 manual with the black leather upgrade.

Can't wait till it arrives!!

I think I'd believe the Volvo literature. Whatever, the D5 is a cracker and so's the V50. Enjoy.

Agreed I'd have more faith in the book than the rep - drove both manual and geartronic last week both strong once I'd got used to the longer throw on the man - I've a 2.0D man at the mo and the box is considerbly different, its the T5 box in the D5 i think.

Anyhow just ordered the same as you but auto - shame its ridiculous delivery dates, but the last V50 has been a great car and the facelift makes it worth waiting for.

I've ordered one too, I went for the SE Lux version as the ride on the R-Design SE was too harsh for the 40k PA that I do.

Spke to a very helpful man at Volvo UK and the additional torque in the D5 is due to the old geartronic not being quite up to 400 Nm, whereas the manual can andle alot more.

So there is a difference in engine tune depending upon transmission... Interesting!! I still haven't had a delivery date yet from the lease company cry

I think the problem is, is that dealers dont pre-order many of these in, so they have to send off a brand spanking new order for D5's...at least that's what happened when I tried to order one last year.

Will you both post back on here when you (eventually) get your new cars, as I'm thinking about getting one, but would interested to hear some other opinions...like how quick it really is, and how comfy and how economical.

I have a provisional delivery date of 14th July, which is a bit of a wait, but give them their dues, I changed the colour on the order yesterday and they have done this without affecting the delivery time.

Also my local dealer have ordered a V50 R-Design D5 Manual for a demonstrator and have offered to loan it to me for a trip I have plannned in late July if mine is delayed for any reason, can't ask for more than that now, can you?

I hate to put a damper on this enthusiasm but ... I got my V50 D5 in Sept 06, I had a M-B 220D before, and was almost set on a Saab 9-3 wagon until I had a whizz in the Volvo. It goes, feels GREAT ... but! First was turbo failure, dealt with by the Carlisle Volvo dealer really well in 24 hrs. Next was some sort of sensor that brought warning lights on. It's now been off the road a week cos of fuel pump failure "has to be ordered from Sweden sir". Then they discovered that it failed cos the pipe connection was kinked FROM NEW (wrong pipe) and that is a Sweden order too. So, lovely lively car when it's going (I have a loan C-30 1.6 which is gutless right now) but not too impressed with reliability ... I sort of thought on that score it would be better than the Merc. Oh, if only a Mercedes or Volvo could be as reliable as my TVR!!!

Mmm I'm used to poor reliability!! My Focus with it's Peugeot Diesel has been off the road for over 8 weeks with engine troubles over the last year... New engine at 60k had the head gasket go at 16k (76k), I'll get it back tomorrow.Worst news is that I've been quoted a provisional del date for the V50 of 5th Sep!!! It's going to be a long summer!

As requested I'm letting you know that mine finally arrived yesterday. It'd only done 14 miles, so not really opened it up yet, but very smooth and effortlessly brisk. Handbook confirms 400Nm man 350Nm auto. Very pleased with my choice after 130 miles. Showing 33.2mpg average, but this might be skewed by what the factory did in its first few miles of life. Got a couple of hundred mile round trip to do tomorrow so that'll give a clearer picture.
