I'm looking for a diesel motorway cruiser and am considering a 1999 S80 2.5D. I'm sure I've seen somwhere unfavourable comments regarding that engine compared to the later D5, anyone any experiences?

Any decision yet ? I believe the 2.5D you were thinking about is, in fact, the VAG engine - used in lots of VW and Audi cars. Apparently not a patch on the later Volvo D5 so probably worth getting something a bit later. That VAG engine is by no means a dog, though.I can tell you that the D5 is a gem. Earlier ones are 163bhp whilst later are 185bhp. 163 = black engine cover, 185 = silver/grey cover.
Volvo Forum is closed, again, at present. Shame.

I've since put a deposit down on an S60 D5, which I was very impressed with on test drive, hopefully will be ideal for the motorway cruising role. Thanks for the replies.
Great choice. Welcome to the club. I love my S60 D5 SE Geartronic. Brilliant long distance cruiser. Taking it off to the Italian Lakes in May. You may find two things :1. Turning circle is more Titanic than Smart car. You get used to it.
2. With the OEM Pirelli P6000's on they can "Tramline" and wander a bit. Basically a tyre problem. Change to Conti Sport Contact 2 or others is said to resolve it. I'm still on original Pirelli's and it can be "interesting" over bad surfaces and raised white lines.
Other than that it's a cracker - real mile eater without attracting attention - and the stereo is rather good too. Do use the correct engine oil though..............if it burns any, that is.
Enjoy.
