First time on the volvo forum since its purchase last year so hi everybody.

I am unable to select reverse gear im my 1997 volvo 1.9 TD estate, wait for it..........with 207000 miles!!

Bar the mileage it is a very tidy car with full dealer service history and is up to date with servicing.

Over the past few weeks it has intermittently required a few attempts to select 1st or 2nd though today is the first time that reverse has failed me.

Initially it was whilst setting out in the mornings when the car was cold though now it occassionly happens into a journey of under an hour.

Am I looking at a new gearbox and does anyone know the approx costs so I dont get ripped off or recommend anyone.

I live on the coast in mid wales.

Much obliged if anyone can help in this matter as I need it for work and travel a good 50 per day in the sticks.

Thankyou

My money would be on the gearbox linkage bushes, there's a set at either end of the selector rod under the car. They cost about £15 for proper volvo ones from volvo and will take about quarter of an hour to change. dead easy, couple of 13mm nuts The difference afterwards will be huge.
If you have the left and up gearbox (bloody renault), even with them changed you may get a crunch when selecting reverse. This can be avoided by briefly engaging first before reverse. Don't know why it works, but it does.

If you need some part numbers I can look them up for you, but any dealer will know what your after straight away.
