Tracs/ABS fault?

My '97 V70 T5 appears to have a fault. Been aware for some time that the front wheels can lay copious amounts of rubber with little provocation. Discovered recently, braking hard on a slippery surface, that it also locks-up.
Also very occasionally, under very light braking, I get a vibration through the pedal that feels like abs operating.
The warning light in the Tracs switch only lights when the switch is held.
The relevant fuses appear to be ok.
A bit of 'Googling' reveals that problems in this area are not at all uncommon.
Anyone know if there's an obvious part to check/replace ?
Or where else to go for advice/diagnosis ?
