thinking of getting one of these,what are they like and is there much scope for a bit of a hike in power?

Yes....have a look on www.volvoclub.org.uk and check v6en's S40 T4 and pyapp's V40 T4, both 400bhp plus and a fair number arround the 300bhp mark.

I had an S40 T4 for 15 months, it was ace Brakes weren't brilliant, though.
