Hi guys,

I borrow an old 1989 740 Estate for shifting stuff, would be nice to drop a V8 in it, but in the meantime I have noticed that the rear wiper/washer does not work and also the front intermitent wipe does not work. When I next see the car I was going to have a look and see if I can fix it, but thought that I would ask you chaps for some advance to point me in the right direction. I have only spent about 30 miles with the car, so it's all new to me. I did find the fues box under the ashtray and check that and all seemed fine.

For a 18 year old car, it is not in bad shape, I presume they are galvanised?

Cheers,
Smele.

The rear wash/wipe not working can be caused by a wire break at the tailgate hinge. Easy to sort. The front intermittent is usually the relay going. Volvo relays of this age can usually be resurrected by whipping the lid off and cleaning up the contacts.

Pretty much what I was guessing, as I could see the cable would get a lot of flex. As I say I am not near the car at the moment, where are the relays on these 740's?

May also be worth removing the wiper arm and cleaning the spindle of the rear wiper.
A LOT of crud gets in here and is often responsible for a burnt out wiper motor.
I ended up with a seized motor spindle and stripped it down and cleaned it up with some emery paper. The spindle had rusted solid.

Enjoy your 700 series they are lovely.
Like driving a stately home!!!

Thanks. Fixed. Now I have intermittent wipers on the front, just need to replace that cable on the rear.
