Hi Everyone,

I'm looking at a few different options for a 2nd vehicle at the moment. Seen a few T5Rs but wondering what they are like to run in terms of servicing and when bigger compents might need replacing. Also, should I beware of a high mileage car? (I know most of them will have a fair amount on anyway!)

Any advice appreciated.

Paul.

manc,my 850R has 195k on the clock, its a great car,go for a car with as much history as poss, esp service wise, front bushes wear on wishbones and the top engine mount has to be upgraded to polybush, the engine rocks that little standard bush to bits.mines been chipped Rica and i have powerflow ss ex K&N panal filter, ive not opted for a dump valve,as ive been advised not to, interior wise dont buy one with shagged seats they never come up for sale,T5Rs have leather with suede alacate sides, the 850R has the suede at base and leather sides, dont buy one with the wrong combination seats, german french and swedish, and europarts, sell alot of parts.basicly its a posher t5, slightly better suspension, better alloys, and the T5R has 5 leg alloys, where as the 850R has 7,again original wheels are hard to find,i live in liverpool, and i can do liverpool to manchester,at 90to say 130 on a £10 return, its about 80 round trip for me,once chipped you can only use optimax/V power,or bp ulimate, normal unleaded works but you get abit of pre ignition when you turn of and that crispness goes, your more then welcome to have a go at mine before you buy im always working around manchester, best of luck

Hi,
My friend and I both bought 850R's and had them for 6 years each, these were great cars.
Problems/failures were:
Crank shaft oil seal;ABS/TRACS module failure; aircon read; headlight; lots of tyres; discs, pads; 1x caliper and general servicing/

My one need an auto box rebuild (which is very unuasual), but that was it. I drove mine sedately and my friend thrashed h to within a inch of its life and he had hardley any thing go wrong.

These proved to be undoubtedly quality cars and my favourite car out of the 30+ i have owned.

MPG 300 miles to a tank on a run with a £55 fill
200 miles to a tank when thrashed
259 miles to a tank for varied average driving style and short runs.

Good luck, I am sure you wont be dissappointed.

I wonder if I could pick your brains somewhat.....

I've just aquired a V70 T5 on which the ABS isn't working and the TRACS button appears to do nothing in terms of illuminating a dashboard light, the Traction Control also doesn't work. Is it the same module which controls both and how much did it cost you to replace yours?

JWH,
I managed to purchase from Volvo a new electronic module which bolted with 4 Allen bolts to the ABS manifold body, this cost about £300 from Volvo vs. £2100 for the whole unit!!
This module is a black ABS box (approx 5" x 4" in size), on the under side it consisted of what were effectively 6 solenoids which sit over 6 plungers on the ABS distribution manifold.

This unit controls the TRACS as well if your car is equiped with a TRACS system.

My car showed the TRACS and ABS light on the dash when the unit failed, this was also the case for my friends 850R. My friend obtained a second hand ABS electronic module from a salvage yard and it was an ABS only module and had only 4 solenoids. This did switch his ABS light off and gave ABS functionality, but not the TRACS (2 solenoids missing on the module). This was resolved by obtaining a ABS/TRACS (6 plunge module)module.

From memory the TRACS system only works up to 20 or 30 MPH.

Hope this of use to you.

That's very helpful thankyou - gives me somewhere to start working from! I wouldn't be too concerned about the lack of ABS if it wasn't for the fact that the rear wheels lock under braking before the front which resulted in a good dose of opposite lock at 70 mph when I first discovered the problem! Luckily I was just giving the brakes a good test at the time rather than needing to stop in a hurry.
