V40 T4 weird running

Driving along all fine and dandy then temp guage drops to almost cold. Car starts to run rough, then seems to sort itself out. Expansion tank empty.Trouble is if left for a couple of hours car wont start. It is back at Hildenborough Volvo today and guess what, they say there's nothing wrong! Anybody else had anything similar?
Oh its a 2000 phase 2, 56k miles. i bought it new and its been fully serviced by Volvo......never let me down before

I have the same model, same year, but regret I cannot help directly. If you don't get any joy here you may like to try the Volvo Owners Club V40 forum

Mine has covered about 40K miles more and the only problem I had was part of the internal casting of the turbo came adrift and jammed an impeller. It took 5 days to find that one and a large bill but I hope you get your problem resolved with minimal pain.

Thanks Richard, Hildenborough Volvo now think it could be one of the sensors so I'll see what happens. Shame as i love the car and need my confidence restored. Last thing I need is for it to breakdown on holiday with the family on board!

I'm no mechanic by any stretch of even the most fertile of imaginations, however it sounds sensor related. Hopefully, this diagnosis will deliver a quick fix and not hurt the wallet too much.

Well, after 500 quid it appears that it could be the head gasket on the way out They have replaced all the hoses and clips oh yes and the thermostat. Have to say I'd be a little surprised if it was the head gasket, esp as it has been serviced on the button every year by a main dealer! Wasnt overly happy with their attitude that " well Sir the car is almost 7 years old and it has done nearly 60k miles so you should expect this sort of thing"
Guess who is off to the Audi garage at the weekend!
