Hi, changing the family motor, 525d gone. I run a 928 and RS2 for fun driving; this is the family car, french hols towing a small trailer, two kids, DVD players in back etc etc. Needs to cover decent distance in comfort and at reasonable cost. Anyone any views on suitability and if general consensus is OK any advice on where to look. Just missed two loaded low mileage reasonably priced ones but the rest are all 30k or 40k+ mile jobs. Surprised how hard they are to find good ones, presumably didn't sell in big numbers. Want something that we can hang onto for a few years. Also does the V70 compare, floor plan is smaller I assume.

All advice gratefully receieved.

It's not exactly spectacular to drive. But in all fairness it does the job you described particularly well. The seats in the old generation S80 are also more comfortable. The D5 is fairly reliable, nowhere near as bad as the T6 - ours for instance seems to spend almost as much time in a garage as on the road

The 80 is more spacious inside but the boot is definitely insufficient for 4 people and oddly shaped. If you buy luggage to fit it, it works fine but put in one standard large suitcase and there is remarkably little space for anything else. In that respect the V70 is clearly better.

For there being so few, well, apart from luxury cab companies few people actually bought them privately in the UK AFAIK. And if the driving of the guys in one of the largest of them (which might well be the largest customer for the cars in the UK) is anything to go by, I would not want to buy a used one off them. They change them at ca. 39 or 49 k miles, so watch out for those. In spite of the low mileage and good maintenance I'd probably steer clear. They are usually well equipped but have no DVD in the back.
