I really don't know crap all about Volvo's....

I saw this:

Shouting Dealer said:
OUTSTANDING IN NAUTIC METALLIC, BLACK LEATHER/ QUILTED ALCANTRARA TRIM, SWITCHABLE AUTO, 2319 CC 5 CYL TURBO 240 BHP, FOUR WHEEL DRIVE SIPS, DRIVER & SIDE AIRBAGS, ELEC GLASS SUNROOF, F & R WINDOW/MIRRORS DRIVER SEAT WITH MEMORY, HEATED SEATS, TRACS, ALLOY DASH & WHEELS 17' GRAPHITE SATELLITE PHASE 2 "R" ALLOYS, COMPUTER, LOWERED "R' CHASSIS, CLIMATE CONTROL AIR-CON, ROOF RAILS, REAR SPOILER BLUE BACKED INSTRUMENTS, FRONT FOG LAMPS, CRUISE CONTROL, REMOTE LOCKING/ALARM, DEADLOCKING, VOLVO R.D.S RADIO/CASS/3XCD, DOLBY PRO-LOGIC SOUND FIRST REG SEPT 1997 FULL 98 MODEL,SERVICED AND MAINTAINED WITHOUT EXPENSE BY US FOR THE LAST ENTHUSIAST OWNER 103,000 CAR DUE IN 20TH JAN PICTURE IS FROM 2000 WHEN WE SOLD TO CURRENT OWNER, NOW WITH LATER R ALLOYS

And then...went and had a drive in this:

Dealer said:
2000 VOLVO V70 2.4T...one owner, 123k miles full Volvo history, premium spec, leather trim, winter+elec pack, alloys, CD, cruise control, etc exceptional condition throughout, only. £4,950

The dealer seemed to think that £4950 was a steal on this...
It was a good drive, felt very very solid etc...

What I want to know is, what the differences between the TurboR, the T5 and the 2.4Turbo I drove today..?
Is it a good price?

Anything I should know?

yikes

Gorvid in 'buys volvo shocker:

Marvellous cars old chap, personally I would go for the latter version, they are lovely inside, drive well, carry loads etc etc. The 'R' versions are nuts and eat tyres. I used to drive the T5 which also munched it's way through tyres and went like hot snot. My last S80 had the 2.4 non turbo, nice and smooth but needed the turbo.

Now you have sorted 'sensible' out, off you pop onto something silly, move along please...

R is the highest spec but that car is the older shape, looking a bit dated now and the switchgear & dash is older. V70 T5 next one down from the V70R and still bonker quick for an estate car. 2.4T has a lower pressure turbo (Volvo call it a light-pressure turbo) so less bhp (not as bonkers as the V70T5) but is designed to give a smoother drive.

the R will be more fun, in the dry. Although the later model will drive better, and as already been said will have a better interior. Very ergonomic and fantastic seats.

The newer cars are generally reliable. Can't comment too much on the older model, I only drove an old V70 T5 once and that was interesting - so quick in first I couldn't change before it redlined

The older model R had 240 BHP which is less than the T5 of the newer model (250 BHP) and you could get an AWD R or just an R. The newer model R is AWD has 300 (unless it's auto in which case, it unofficially has a lower BHP and a T5 is quicker on paper)

If you're looking at a later model, check to see if yours might be affected by the ETM issue mentioned on another thread (the watchdog one).
My car ('03 S60 T5) has only had two major issues, partly because of the sports suspension.
i) knocking and all types of noises from the suspension - mainly front. Not obvious all the time, often just random. Dealer hasn't been able to identify the cause so didn't fix it. Chances are it will be anti roll bar or top mounts or bushes. But I know of people who have had nearly everything replaced and it still does it. I saw a car identical to mine on holiday and asked they driver if he had the same problem, he described exactly the same things. It's also not limited to just the sports suspension too. Not sure if you'd have the same issue on the 'R'.

ii) needed a new headlight unit. Apparently these things get very hot and they're on all day long. Mine decided to melt. I thought it was a one off, but the garage said it has been known to happen on these cars.

you might get more information on www.vpcuk.org

and yes, as someone else said the R and T5 will eat front tyres. My current fronts need doing this week and have lasted about 5000 miles - I don't do much motorway driving though.

I've been driving V70 T5's for the last 7 or 8 years - probably around a dozen different cars and I reckon on getting about 10,000 from a set. Trick is not to crucify them in first gear. Once the novelty of spinning the wheels wears off it's a case of gentle in 1st count to 3 or 4 and then nail it!

do you find the TC does next to nothing to prevent wheelspin? Mine's a geartronic which gives a little less control over the delivery which might have an impact. when it's a little damp, the inside wheel will nearly always spin a little. Another issue with mine is the camber set up of the wheels because of their size and lowered suspension which means the inside wears slightly quicker. Can't really complain though, the balance is perfect. And my local independent tyre dealer is about 60 quid cheaper than a well known national...

just brought a S60 R. See my new toy thread. Still have my V40 T4. The S60 is great and so much torque. The V40 t4 is still as fun to drive.

funny you mention that.

Before buying the S60, I had an ST220 on order which went horribly wrong (mentioning no traders...), so I cancelled it.
Then, after buying a house, things were a bit strapped so I started thinking about my fuel bills so about a year ago I nearly traded mine (what was I thinking!!! yikes ) for a 2.2TDi which has 155 bhp (same as the STTDI). Reckoned I could get that chipped and it would be nearly as quick. Which on paper, it would be.

But, for a driving environment, the S60 wins hands down. And then I couldn't really bring myself to have a "performance" diesel. I love the flexibility of a petrol engine. And I love the unique sound of the 5cyl. Many other things were factored in (comfort, size etc), but I couldn't drag myself away so I bit the bullet on the fuel bills and a year later, I'm now considering a RICA upgrade

Don't get me wrong. I had a Mondy Mk2 and I've driven many new ones, and they are great cars. But having made the move from Mondeo to S60, I wouldn't want to move back. I don't think I'd ever want to change it either (except maybe for an XC90 V8 )

i had a T5, but after about 8 new tyres and 23mpg i got a D5 with 185bhp, the amazing thing is that the differnce up to 100mph is not that noticeable, the t-5 used to wheelspin to 40mph in the dry on a straightroad, though after 100 the t-5 stil give u a kick in the back whereas the d5 goes to 3k revs and does 36mpg! i recently had a guy in an rs6 ask if my car was chipped and had lots of strangers look amazed when i tell them its diesel, however perhaps i should go to dieselheads, and not pistonheads..'l'

i would choose the newer model, big gap between old and new shape v70's in quality exterior/interior

Interesting - my T5 is currently averaging 31MPG! Ok, still getting used to the car and the driving that I do is very much a mixture of busy motorway and fast A road (with very little stop-start rush hour traffic), but I think that is pretty good. Mind you, my BMW 535i used to get 28MPG on the same route and the manufacturer figures for the combined cycle said it was supposed to be 26MPG.

Christ only knows what I would get if I got a diesel.... hehe

That's incredibly good. The very best I've ever seen over the years on numerous T5's is 27 mpg. Altough I never tend to put more than 10k miles on them and they do loosen up after a while.
