Interesting afternoon I've had!

Doing a turn in the road (well you know - turn in and out of a junction at the same time), I always have to make it a two point turn because of the turning circle.

At the point of selecting R, the box selected P and stayed there. Lever still in R but could not select P and therefore could not remove keys. So, gearbox in P = car not going anywhere. Lever in D, N or R = problem.

Car now stationery across the approach to a T junction. After much fiddling around, obviously nothing worked I called Volvo in Reading and Phil W Cars in Slough, both tried to be as helpful as possibly but as the techies had all left, they were (a) unable to advise and (b) very suprised that this had happened given the age and mileage.

Anyway top marks to Tony from the AA who arrived 20 mins later and pulled a few cables by the gearbox to get the car into R and then N so we could move it. He then spent ages taking the centre console apart to get access to a chunky little aluminium pin which the selector cable clips onto but had come off somehow and as there was no pull on the cable, this put the car into park.

Nothing had actually broken and everything fitted back together nicely. Lever feels much tighter than before so very happy

Just wondering if this had happened to anyone else before?? And also, anyone know what would happen if it came off whilst driving? I doubt it will again - it was put back on pretty tight, must have been a bit too quick selecting R today, but in theory if that's the only thing keeping the car out of P, then would the car know not to select P if moving?

Last thing - I now have a Gear Selector Reduced Function message. Everything works ok, but sort of expected it. Gonna have SWMBO drop it into PW Cars at some point to have it cleared off, but can it be done any other way without the computer?
