I found the S40 a bit too small. Not as good to drive as a Focus, although no doubt about the quality of the interior being better. Test drove the 2.0D you mentioned and it's not slow, but not a D5.
Anything in S guise is not as desirable as the SE as there are quite a few toys missing. But I'd say the S60 will be much better to cruise in. Very comfortable ride, decent engine the D5. I prefer the dash to that "floating" console which digs into the side of my knee and in my view the S60 has great proportions.
If money isn't the issue, make the decision on the type driving you do and how big you like your cars.
Having said that, I do a 5 mile commute and I have an S60

To me S60 would be choice no comparison.
The D5 is a cracker of an engine and the seats are so much more comfortable.
On the other hand I have a 2.0D V50 as daily snotter.
Downgraded from SE to S as the extra kit in the SE not that interested in, then spent the money saved on putting back in the extra kit I did want.
Could have had V70 but can drive one of them anytime and wanted something a bit smaller.
Have you thought about V50 with D5 engine? Cracker of a motor. See other threads.
My £0.02p anyway.

The V50 with the D5 and a manual would be perfect but unfortunately I don't fancy the geartronic and its not on the car list yet.
