my car makes a ticking noise BUT only when cold and the noise stops after 5 mins max!! (she's been doing it since i got her 18months now and hasnt got any worse) im using castrol magnatech oil and other than the above issue the car runs very quiet mechanicly ...shes 108'000 miles so far

anyone else's 850 a bit tappy when cold??

my 2003 S60 does exactly the same thing. And my dad's S80s do too.

I think it's a "feature". Like you say, it goes away after a bit of warming up.

Also noticed that my mate's S4 V8 also does it at idle.

When people hear it, they immediately say "ooh, your tappits are going!". I think it's just the injectors doing their thing. I'm sure someone more knowledgeable than me can give a proper explanation.

It's most probably the self-adjusting hydraulic tappets. My S40 T4 does it sometimes, but the owner's manual says it's perfectly normal.

fair enough then..i wasnt particularly worried as i got the car VERY cheap,so if it was anything on the way out i'd have bought myself a T5 (like ive been promising myself the last few months)

'course not, it's a Volvo Still, that's no reason not to get a T5!
