Hi all .. was looking for words of wisdom , things to look out for etc on '03/'04 xc90's. Most likely it'll be a 2.4 D5 se. I'm new to the world of Volvo and appreciate any help.

Try and go for a 2004 car if you can, alot of the 2003's have problems with the rear wheel bearings and tyre wear, admittedly alot of them now have the problems fixed/sorted but some still have them.

D5 SE geartronic is the best choice to go with.

Thanks for that .. got an early jan '04 model that had a bearing done .. milage is highish for the year .. 50k , but the price (21.5k) was good I thought .. It's a d5 se , anything in particular to watch out for? .. That 5 cylinder diesel sounds strange , but I'm used to a flat 6 boxer ...

Thats a very good price even considering the mileage!

Just make sure the tyres are all good and the discs are in decent condition as they tend to wear through those quite quickly, but other than that nothing really to worry about.

Thanks again , I'm expecting I'll have to change the discs soon but the tyres are perfect .. Do the diesels give any trouble??

Nah almost never, be unlucky to have a problem with one, ive seen 53 plate S80 D5's (same engine) with 325k on the clock and not had any problems.

Holy sh1tballs! Thats great news thanks .. I was a bit worried as the engine DOES sound a little unusual with the 'missing' cylinder .. I suppose I'll get used to it ..

Unusual isnt always a bad thing!

Stick a sports exhaust on a petrol 5cyl Volvo and they sound stunning.
