I know the title is oxymoronic (joke!) But we were out comparing my Alpina B8 against his E60 M5 in P400 mode. And basically we were coming from the Liss roundabout direction guildford and then you have a massive straightaway.(about 1.2km) amazingly it was completely clear. So i was in the fast lane, my dad in the slow lane, just about to accelerate when i look in my mirrors (we were doing 45mph odd) and see a yellow Volvo right on my tail all of a sudden. Damnit, so we two nail it and i pull away from the m5(alpina was faster) However the m5 couldnt shake the volvo. We came to traffic with the volvo right behind me. When it cleared again he chased after me, right on my tail. I pulled away from him by approx 4 or 5 lengths but not as much as i was expecting.

I was blooming impressed. Was it anyone on here perhaps? I could see in the front airsam there was a really nice intercooler.

I used to know the name of the model of Volvo but it has slipped my mind, but it was a mid nineties car and im sure this one was based on an "T version of some sort?

Thanks for any help.

Not that surprising as the T5s can get to an easy 300bhp with only minor mods and must weigh significantly less than the M5.

It would have been interesting to see what the battle would have been like with the M5 running on full power.

(BTW, what's the point of the P400 mode? Surely the whole point of owning such a super-saloon is to be able to burn off such interlopers with ease? )

I think P400 was merely for emmisions and fuel consumption figures. Also it gives me a chance in the alpina to keep up! With P500S mode it is really really fast.

Actually on P400 the consumption is worse than P500 for some reason! I think the best my father has gotten is an average of about 11 or 12mpg....normal driving.

No can't afford it.

Since buying Adams old E39 I've averaged 18.1 mpg, made up of mixed town and motorway driving. As of a few days ago my brother's new E60 has averaged 10.8mpg on town driving, quite alarming considering he's still running the car in according to BMW schedule. Asuming my E39 would be an average of 15mpg town driving, the e60 is looking 30% less fuel efficient.

Does sound like a tuned T5 of some sort. The Audi engine it's based on will get 400bhp on a standard block, and the volvo is a 2.5 over the audi's 2.2 so i'd imagine it would be getting on for around that. Can get them up to about 650 reliably but i imagine youd've heard it coming if that was the case with this one!

It ain't based on an audi engine. only the diesel engine in the 850 is an audi unit.

Hi Guys,
Russ has done a lot of work on my T5 (over 300Hp/450Nm torque) as well as suspension, brakes etc. What a difference, what a great machine, what a great mechanic. Bill
