Hi chaps I have the oportunity to purchase a 60k Mile C70 T5 "V" 99 reg for £6500. It has all the trimings etc and having been messing about in my golf I realy fancy it. My question to you Volvo PHers is this. Will I enjoy it? I do alot of motorway mile and am thinking about getting it tuned "chipped" to 310bhp...is this worth it? any thoughts / comments? Also is there anything that tends to go wrong with these or that will need changing soon (i.e cam belts etc..) many thanks

Price seems about right but I suggest if you havent already done so to register on www.volvot5.co.uk/

You'll find a wealth of info about T5s and they're a friendly bunch to boot!

I luuuurve my 850 T5R. I do about 90-100 motorway miles for my daily commute and the volvo just laps them up

T5 motor is stonking, and needs servicing about every 10000 miles. Not the most frugal with petrol either, but if I don't hammer the pedal too hard I can squeeze 30-32mpg out of her. Eats tyres for brekkie too, so I have to budget £300-£350 every 6 months or so for new ones

Despite all that, it's the best car I've ever had

Hi,

Congratulations on your purchase and I'm sure that you will enjoy the car immensely! Getting an ECU upgrade is something which a lot of owners tend to go for, however, I should point out that its worth having a read about ECU reprogramming in Volvos before comitting to any of the ugrades on offer (there are at least 4 major tuners in the UK). Broadly speaking, getting an extra 60-70bhp out of just an ECU upgrade on a 99 model T5 is very difficult and you will find that companies that make such claims usually have disclaimers which are equally elaborate. Getting to those kinds of power figures usually entails some hardware modifications too. There is a wide spread of owners with tuned cars from all the major tuners on the UK Volvo Owners Club forums (www.volvoclub.org.uk) so its definitely worth having a read on there too and posting up any questions you may have. The club also has regular "Performance Section" meets where there's a collection of tuned cars and that is another place to get good advice and a feel for tuned cars (the next meet is on 29th Jan 2006, near Uxbridge).

Definately worth it! I can guarantee you will enjoy it. Two things that can go wrong with the C70 are throttle module and heater mattrix, but other than that they are sound and you shouldn't have any problems. Cambelt I think is due at 90k. If you go to www.volvotuninguk.com they can do everything in one go.

Best cars we have ever had on the traffic section....everyone agrees, even to this day they the lads haven't enthused about a car as much. The mercs we have now aren't a patch on them, and the omegas' that replaced the volvo's....

Cheers for the encouragement chaps. I went ahead and purchased the C70 T5 on Sunday, just silky smooth. I took your advice and had a look at Volvo.org (owners club) and was slightly alarmed to read about the ETM module failures have any of you suffered this and did you have to cough up £++!?

This issue has plagued some of the early model ME7 T5s but its my understanding that Volvo have put their hands up and admitted defeat on this one. In the US, owners will be compensated for the costs of replacing faulty ETMs and it is just a matter of time before that filters across to Europe. I think there were some posts on this on the Volvo Owners Club forum too so it may be worth doing a quick search of the archives.

Price is good providing its not an abused example, watch out for wind noise from the doors aswell can be a pain to fix.

Rica is the best option as they offer a number of different states of tune and just like one of the other brands of re maps work closely with Volvo.

Volvoclub are very much against Rica for some reason but I have had no problems with them or the product and with regards to elaborate power claims as previously accused my car was meant to emerge with 340bhp but in fact had 352bhp so can hardly complain.
