Anyone with one of these (ideally chipped) fancy taking a prospective owner out for a run?

I'm in London mid-week and Teesside all other times. Happy to travel to meet up. A slap-up on me as a thank you.

Haven't got one but test drove one recently. Stonking engine and that was in standard tune - mountains of torque and very smooth with it. Can't wait for it to appear in the V50

I test drove an S60 D5 SE Geartronic the other day, whilst mulling over whether to change.

You only remember you're driving a diesel when you pull away from junctions. It's a really nice motor. Not driven a chipped one, but I can imagine it must be quick. I have read somewhere though that the geartronic/auto can't handle too much torque (hence the early upshifts on the R model), so I'm not sure how much more guts it can handle before the torque converter melts

Also drove an S40 2.0D, which was a little quicker but more fidgety. The D5 in a V50 would be quite something I reckon.

Thanks, gents, for responses. I'd definitely by looking at a manual variant. Hope SWMBO takes to one (if I go for it) better than the S70 which she absolutely detested.

My wife has an S60 2.0T. She has never had a volvo before but she absolutely loves it, this is coming from a BMW e39 540 and various Mercs. I cannot see her (us) replacing it for anything other than another S60 which will possibly be the D5 Version. It's as good as the bmw's we have had, and I think a nicer shape than most of the other characterless boxes on the road.

The only thing with ours that gets a negative response is the turning circle, it's absolutely dire, but the car makes up for that with everything else.

The D5 is massively quicker than the S40 2.0D, theirs no comparison even the old D5 engine is quicker!

The new V50 D5's have appeared on Volvo's central computer to order so they will be on their way shortly, auto only to start off with though!

Expect to see V50 D5s and S40 D5s around september 2006 - Also bear in mind that the D5 will be a Euro IV version with increased BHP to 186bhp standard rather than the 163 of the Euro III cars. Euro IV D5s will be race-tune.com RICA chipable to 226bhp and up to 470-490Nm. Compare this to the V50 T5 which only has 220bhp and you have a diesel that can only be quicker than the fastest petrol version! Its going to be a great car as the S40 T5 I'm driving at the moment is RAPID!

Removing the bump-stops on the S60 will increase the turning circle - It will however be an MOT failure.

I had a D5 SE as a company car for over 1 year and did 50K. It was a fab car and went like stink, no matter how hard I drove it I always got 40mpg (mainly 42). It was very comfy with loads of kit and a mega stereo. I had a few computer problems but mine was an early model so maybe it was a glitch.

I wish I had brought it from the company, never mind. Dont get the spoked alloys (the later ones had 2 options of 17" they are very soft and hard to clean.

Agree with all of the above. My work car is an S60 2.0T and after 84K it still pulls and pulls.

The most comfortable car I've ever had.

Can't help but agree with all these comments. The S60 D5 is a superb motorway eater... My '03 model has over 80,000 miles under its belt and the engine is still sweet as a nut.

Works particularly well when mated to the auto 'box - nice big wall of torque on tap for effortless overtaking

I've had two S60 D5 SE Auto's now and my current one has 84K on the clock.
They are a great car and a superb high mileage motorway cruiser.
I cover circa 35k-40k miles per year and never had a fault on either.
I went to a C70 launch event last Thursday, and that will be my next car with the 180BHP Diesel engine with the auto box which will be available as a 2007 model late this year. (They will only do the diesel with auto, but it would have been my choice anyway)

Ditto Gimlet!

On my second S60 D5 SE. Manual boxes though. Keeps the company car tax down a bit. 40k miles per annum.
Cracking cars. Understated, comfy and well spec'd. Rear legroom is poor, but i am 6'3.

I am looking to get a C70 D5 in due course.

Cheers

I would let you drive mine for a bit if you get me dinner.

I have a immaculate black s60 with every option on it. I had a t-5 previously that was very fast but the D-5 , i only notice the difference in accleration past 90mph (test track obviously).

Mine has 18 inch wheels, 235 tyres. The downsides of these volvos is that the steering is too floaty and i have lost it on two bends, whereas i have never lost control on my other cars, which i drive with much more gutso,

Where in london are you?@ the great smartnav in my car will get me there.

Thinking of getting a D5 SE circa 2002/2003 - budget restricted, so probably 75K and above.
Will be doing 35K myself, am I daft or what?
Will be doing a fair mix of cruising and hill & dale (A & B roads), so what do I need to consider given the above?
Big service @ 95/96K for cam belts, IIRC - how much is that likely to sting me?

All matters of advice greatly appreciated.

When did lecy seats come as standard on SE's? 2003 or 2002 ?

I'm in a similar position to you, my D5 is on 82k miles and I plan on sticking at least another 40k on that total over the next 2 years.

That's the same sort of driving profile that I do, and the D5 is excellent at it. Although it might not be the most glamourous car, it certainly performs well, with a decent ride/handling balance. It's due a service ASAP, and I'll be getting some poly bushes fitted in the front wishbones as this is a common upgrade to make the handling a little tighter and should solve the problem of uneven tyre wear I've had.

I've not got electric seats in my '02' reg D5 SE.

mine has 25,000 mile and nothing has gone wrong

I had a X regs Volvo S60 t-5, and apart from the costly tyres, (235-18) , it was great, i did 110,000 mile in it in 3 years and nothing went wrong

the d5 is great, i average 38mpg and i travel swiftly

i think the car is a 'glamorous' car, I get about 4-5 strangers a week telling me how 'heavy;, good and sporty the car looks, i even got 2 guys in a 360 spider saying that, but they were probably taking the p****, It is a classy car, and if u get the xeons, chrome pack, w pack, 18inch 235 wheels i think it looks great. understated

Funny you should say that, going to have a looksee at one with 18's, Xenon and winter & sport packs.
Sure hope it's as good as it sounds, drive-wise.
