I’ve looked at two almost identical Volvo V50 1.6D DRIVe SE Lux Edition today 2011/2012 both ~100k miles in the £3500-4000 range.
I’m not a previous Volvo owner and the flip up screen is confusing me (and both the dealers who had little idea).

In one car it didn’t flip up at all, in the other it did but I couldn’t figure out how to use it, is it a touch screen? There’s no obvious controls for “nav” anywhere. In the one it flipped up, it didn’t close when the car was turned off. There’s a sort of ‘nipple’ next to the panel but I can’t figure out if this is a button or what.

I tried Google without getting anywhere. I’m not sure a 2011 satnav is a huge bonus but I’d like to know what it’s supposed to do, how it works.. if it can do anything else, if I can disable it from popping up if I don’t want it, etc.

It seems a nice car as a builders merchant runaround, any other tips?

The car should have a "remote control" which should be in there somewhere.

In fairness it isn't that good/easy to use even when updated.

The remote will get it to flip up when you turn it on, many default it to stay off as it isn't much use.

Oh OK - this may be long lost, if I buy one off eBay or whatever is it tricky to get it to pair with the car?

I think it is just like a TV remote in that it works with any of the correct type.

As I recall the Nav could be operated by either the remote, or the buttons and nipple on the right indicator stalk. I never used the remote as the stalk controls were to hand. The nipple moves the cursor around the screen/map and the menus. The buttons on the top of the stalk are on/select and back. It isn't a touch screen unless you want something to punch. When I had a C30 with it fitted I tended to use it as a map with live traffic overlaid, although I'm not sure whether the RDS traffic it used is still active.
I think the gears lifting the screen could be a weakness, so if the screen doesn't lift it may mean these need to be replaced.

I actually came across some photos showing that some cars have a little 'joystick' (maybe on the indicator stalk) and others only have the remote - the remote seems if it was fitted aftermarket?

I would assume using the remote while driving would technically be illegal but either way it seems I can get this figured out. Good to know it isn't a touch-screen, that was rather confusing smile

The only thing I'm not sure about, directly next to the panel itself on the right is a plastic nubbin, about 1cm tall. I can't tell if this is supposed to be a control and if so, what function it serves.

It looks like I'll be getting this car in a week so I'll have time to test it all out - if it's useless I would rather find a way to keep the panel permanently down so I can mount a phone holder in the same position!

I suppose the remote would allow the passenger to operate the nav, not sure if it was an option. I think the plastic nubbin might be the receiver for the remote.

I thought it only lifted when requested by either the remote standby button, or the stalk select button.

I did have the manuals for it, but think they might not have survived a purge about a month ago.

Actually, I forgot about the "joystick" as I never actually used mine, just used the remote until I realised it was fairly cr@p & just left it down/off.

I did see a video on Youtube of someone who had modded theirs to act as a screen for an aftermarket parking camera and stuff.. but I really am not into that. Either it works tolerably or I'll want to disable it smile
