Hi all, can anyone point me in the right direction to find information about the 850 with regard to where on the car is most susceptible to rust? I have a small amount on both sides rear lower wheel arches at the front edges where the arch meets the sill… No other rust is visible… the car is a long time keeper so I’m looking to eliminate all the corrosion the old girl might have in the coming months…
TIA…
Richard

Good evening Richard,

I don't know of any specific resource for rust on the 850 but I can give you firsthand knowledge of my '95 850 wagon. Second owner but purchased from the original owner at 4 1/2 years old. Currently have the car stripped down in areas to refresh the suspension. 335,000 km's on the clock.

I am located in Ontario, Canada where they are not afraid of liberally salting the roads in winter.

I did find a bit of corrosion in the same area you have mentioned but only on the drivers side.

- Also check the rear wheel arch return, around the top where it returns back to the inner fender. This is a pinch weld area.
- located some minor surface rust behind the plastic rear wheel arch liners but not serious.
- the skirts/rockers are plastic. Once removed there might be some corrosion hidden in the seam where the rocker meets the floor. Concealed behind the plastic rocker cover.
- front fenders where the mudflap is secured.
- tailgate below the rear window glass
- the rear bumper is held on by hidden brackets that have a powder coated finish which fails and can leave the rear bumper sagging. Also concealed.
Otherwise, the factory rustproofing has held up quite remarkably.

Did snap off one of the rear shock absorber bolts changing out the rear upper mounts. Nasty bit of corrosion on the bolts.

I will probably think of another area but my car is in surprisingly great shape for the location it lives.
Also a keeper.
