Potential V90 R-Deisgn 18/19 Plate Purchase - Any Issues?
Discussion
I’m currently looking at the V90 “Cross Country” as an option to replace a 3 Series with the same running gear as the 520 that you mention.
Can’t speak specifically for the 5, but the 3 has given a lot of mechanical problems in the first 60k miles, including between £4k & £5k of warranty work (new PCV, Turbo, Oil/Water heat exchanger, and Cat) - so I’d stay away from the BMW based on personal experience.
Can’t comment on the Volvo yet, as I’m still doing my research. It does seem like an awful lot if car for a relatively small engine though.

I can offer some real world experience having previously had a 16 plate 335d and 18plate 530d both tourings and recently purchased a 2019 D4 V90 cc pro.
From an engine perspective there is no comparison. The BMWs silky smooth power delivery and effortless torque wins hands down. The D4 isn't as bad as reviews seem to make out and it only really struggles when needs to really get some power down. On start up it sounds a bit ...well four pot diesel, but honestly once driving the engine noise is suppressed extremely well.
Transmission on the Volvo is a little bit undecided, particularly in city /town driving but this is the same as all 8 speeds. It doesn't really bother me. No flappy paddles on the Volvo of this vintage.
Interior of the Volvo and overall cabin space wins hands down. The quality of materials, the seats, the space and just the fine details. To me this is a premium as your going to get without spending a considerable amount more. I'm getting on well with all the tech onboard.
I'm getting 40+ mpg from my D4 but that's only on shortish journeys and expect that to rise.
If I were comparing the 5 and the v90 I'd pick the v90 everytime. It's just a nicer place to be overall and BMWs are now ubiquitous. I've not seen another v90 cc whilst in mine, so feels a bit more unique.

Had a v90 d5 r design for 3 years and 30k. No issues apart from a sump leak, sorted under warranty and a recall to replace a engine intake pipe somewhere.
Supremely comfortable and an interior I still miss.
On engine size, I tried the D4 and t4 too, absolutely fine but lacked a little when loaded. D5 makes quite a difference and is surprisingly swift, even 4up with luggage. An EV or 6 pot smoothness would suit the cars character better though.
