XC90 T8 - Baffling Economy and Viability
Discussion
Seriously considering a XC90 T8 PHEV, moving from a 2020 V90 Inscription.
What I can't reconcile are the economy claims, salesguys repeatedly throw around massive (weighted) mpg's and trying to convince them otherwise is outside their factory training. They forget that electricity costs about 33p per kW/hr for instance.
A small electric range (20-30 km) then a snorting petrol engine doesn't add up to good overall economy.
Has anyone any real world experience please or help explain the amazing WTLP claims?

If you're looking at one up to a year old you should get the newer 18.8kWh battery, official range is about 42 miles compared to 30 on the old 11.6kWh battery. Obviously you need to taker that with a pinch of salt much like any quoted MPG figures for ICE engines.
Worth investigating off peak tariffs with your energy supplier, can definitely beat 33p per kWh. Try Octopus.
If you can do most of your driving on electric you will save money, but your longer journeys will cost you a bit more. Whatever engine you go for it'll cost you more than the V90 due to aerodynamics and weight.

Hi, I’ve just ordered a T8 as a company car as the BIK is just 8%. I had a demo for two weeks and was getting around 35 miles to a charge. Where I started with a full charge and did my office commute of 110 miles, I got around 50mpg if I stick to speed limits. Journeys up to 50 miles could easily show 200 mpg. But, and it’s a reasonably large But, when zero charge it’s a 30mpg car. I don’t think that’s a shocker for a 455hp 7 seater.
My last car was an X5 40d and the best that got was mid 30’s. Currently in a loan XC60 T6 and the first 20,000 miles (by previous driver) show average 53mpg and that has barely a 20 mile range.
My view is that most long journeys are for work and I can claim fuel. Holidays etc will be on me but I’ll suck it up and be happy I’m driving an £85k car for £255 a month!
Hope this helps?

How did you manage getting a demo for two weeks? That’s a proper real world test drive!!My last car was an X5 40d and the best that got was mid 30’s. Currently in a loan XC60 T6 and the first 20,000 miles (by previous driver) show average 53mpg and that has barely a 20 mile range.

I work in the leasing industry where longer term demo’s are fairly normal, especially when it’s a legitimate reason i.e. I had to choose a car rather than having one just for funI've posted a few times about my view on economy, it really depends how you use the vehicle.
Electricity is still cheaper per mile than petrol, but it did get closer at the beginning of this year when prices went up
I posted this on another thread last year. I did the same journey this year, only with 4 bikes bikes on the back, and achieved 34mpg, which is probably more to do with the engine being better run in.

I've just spent a week in the Trossachs, Scotland (I live in Surrey). Just over 1200 miles in total, with most of the local driving being up and down hill.
Fully charged when I left, with no other opportunity to charge, so the kw numbers beyond the battery's 11kw are recuperated from the slowing down. The car was loaded with 4 humans, a dog, and all the paraphanailia for winter Scottish munro bagging that that entails.
There was an awful lot of seat and steering wheel heating going on!
