Volvo V50 d2 engine noise
Discussion
Hi.
I have just got back from a trip to the highlands from Gloucestershire, and tried to keep a good mpg from my 2010 V50 1.6 d2.
I noticed that when I was on very light throttle on flat surface I had a engine rattle/vibration. As soon as I applied anymore throttle it disappeared. As soon as I went back to just maintaining speed it came back.
Power was good, no other noises and no shaking. I’m really confused!
Car had new injectors about 18 months ago and had the most up to date software from main dealer so I don’t think it’s that, but as soon as engine under any load it goes.
Any ideas?
Thanks

Dual mass flywheel?
SD.
Hmmm, could be I guess. When I accelerate harder it all ‘tightens up’, is the best way I can describe it.SD.
At idle it’s exactly as I would expect, accelerating in a normal manner fine, kind off flowing along 5% throttle and the noise is there, but more throttle and it goes…

Just been out to remind myself, it is like a very quick buzzing noise. Not a knock, rattle, squeak or bang but like how a diesel would normally sound but much louder under light throttle.
I have had a gearbox bearing fail before. It sounds buzzy and you can hear it spinning in the box as you drive. A diesel engine would hide some of that noise . Its not a cheap fix as you need to pull the gearbox out and most garages will send it off to the gearbox specialist to fix. lingus75 said:

I have a 2009 S40 saloon R Design, albeit with the earlier 1.6 16v wet DPF engine, and I think you get a 6-speed box as well with yours mine's a five. I saved it from the scrap heap by fixing the DPF problems it had and all told apart from the usual P1 platform problems like sunroof drains it is ok apart from awful vibration and sound in the cabin. So I've been doing a lot of research in this area, you find a good amount of information by checking Ford focus forums as well given that they are much more popular but on the same platform. The C30 is very popular, especially with younger crowd. So don't limit yourself to searching for your problems by typing in V50, check the whole P1 platform and the Ford/Mazda using the same platform to see if there are any results that match what's going on with you. I came across quite a few threads about the engine vibrating or being noisy at low throttle inputs.I have just got back from a trip to the highlands from Gloucestershire, and tried to keep a good mpg from my 2010 V50 1.6 d2.

I believe my problem is my rear engine mount which is not uncommon. However, a lot of the research I have done indicates that they have problems with gearbox shafts and seals etc. They also have problems with vibrations being transmitted through, I think it's something like the steering arms, mines had to replace twice as a consequence it just says in a service book vibration/judder at low RPM resolved with steering part. There's even a spare one in my boot. I just haven't had time to go through the car properly yet to find out exactly what it is
Mine had a failed MAF sensor and it was juddering and vibrating most at low throttle inputs at steady speeds due to incorrect fueling. Check for any error codes, maybe clean your MAF just even to rule it out.
If you don't have a scanner, you can check all of the main modules for any faults through the dashboard only it won't tell you what they are, just that they are there. If you see anything under the engine control unit I would get that checked into before worrying about anything else.

Thank you for the information, it’s really useful for other things I may encounter also!I believe my problem is my rear engine mount which is not uncommon. I really look after the car and enjoy driving it. My family and all luggage made a 1200 mile round trip in comfort and I really want to keep it tip-top, but have had numerous issues. I’m getting to the point of annoyance now!
I’m hoping engine mount as it would be cheapest fix.
I do get a bit of a clunk when car takes up drive after a gear change unless I am really soft with clutch. I did the front hub bolts thing.
It is strange as it is a definite buzz and no vibration, knocking or clutch slip.

A clunk when taking up drive can definitely be engine mountings. Ironically, I don't get any clunking at all, I think my left and right mounts are fine, but it's the rear one that's letting all this vibration go through the chassis I suspect, I was told they usually fail around my age/mileage. Good luck with it and please do keep us postedI really look after the car and enjoy driving it.
