I did something particularly stupid yesterday.
I tried to reverse my 04 V50 out of the drive on the ice. I'm afraid I span the wheels in revers
for too long in a failed effort to get out. Now the ABS light is on and I have a message saying Anti skid temporarily off.

Can anyone tell me if this is something that will cure itself by driving the car forward when I can get it out or have I buggered an expensive ABS unit.? I have a very helpful garage up the road but I can't get the car there until the ice clears.

Thanks

I suspect you've thrown some dirt onto the ABS sensor/ring.

Wouldn't worry about it. It'll probably clear itself.

Worse case, and slightly weeing on your chips, it might need a new ABS sensor. Won't break the bank though.

For minor problems I use a mobile mechanic. Takes a few weeks to be seen in a garage, £110 to tell you what it is thank you, have to drop car off, bus home.

Mechanic comes around in about two/three days £50 and usually he will tell you what it is.

I once called one as my front offside wheel was really hot in the centre of it, and when I was driving it kept hunting gears, (auto), he diagnosed buggered brake assembly, fitted new unit following day.

It should sort itself out after a short drive forward.

You will now have an ABS controller/ECU that has seen wildly different speed inputs from different wheels.

All it needs now is a short drive to give it fresh/correct/similar speed readings & it will realise the system is operational & the light will go off.

Either that or you’ve thrown a load of ice and slush around the sensor and reluctor ring. Might clear when the weather thaws, or possibly a gentle pressure wash around the wheels and hub might do it.

Unless that slush/ice is magnetic/ferrous or you have a cracked sensor it won't.

V50 has the ABS pick up built into the bearing / hub assembly on the front. I'd echo what's been said, give it a run and if it clears then there's nothing to worry about. If not, get the codes checked first as it could be any one of several things.

Thanks everyone. I finally got the car out, drove it about 50 yards and the light went out.
Again, thanks.
