Volvo V70 (2008-2016) - D5
Discussion
I do 15k PA mostly motorway and am looking for a powerful and economical diesel. The D5 from 2012-2016 is rated at 215 PS and according to autotrader high 50s MPG wise. I'm fine with a manual and I don't normally have a heavy foot, but I like the power to be there when needed....
- Do these really hit the claimed MPG?
- Can they be remapped to 270? Or is the D5 already a remapped D4?
- Anything else to be aware of?

We had a nearly new 2013 plate V70 D5 manual with the twin turbo 215 engine for three years, covering just over 100k miles in that time, of daily motorway commutes:
- It did true mid-40s mpg with the adaptive cruise mostly at 75-80 on quiet stretches of the M40.
- The only remap I was aware of was the official Polestar one that dealerships could apply, taking it to 230PS
- It was a lovely mile muncher. Quiet, heated screen and seats, great headlights, and comfy seats.
- It was a very sensitive to tracking and tyres, i.e. as soon as the tracking was out slightly (which it seemed to be every 15-20k miles) it wore through the front tyres in odd ways. I don't think we ever completed a seat of front tyres through normal wear alone, always one of the shoulders wearing out first.

I'm more of a 65-70 cruiser, so I think the MPG would be >55 for me. Shame it can't be remapped! It's a toss up between a V70 and a Mercedes E class estate thus far- It did true mid-40s mpg with the adaptive cruise mostly at 75-80 on quiet stretches of the M40.

185bhp D5 AWD manual here and it's been sat at 38mpg average for the past two years. That's 95% my wife doing wifey things like running around town, playing bumper cars in Tesco and the odd 100 mile round trip to her mother's. On a steady run over 250 miles, best I saw was 47mpg average. That's according to the on board computer. A friend had the twin-turbo with a manual and reckoned about 30mpg was as good as it gets.

I wonder how the D4 would be for MPG and remapping then. 2014-2016 is 181 bhp and a 2 litre (compared to 2.4 for the D5) so maybe much more economical but not much slower
The later D4 181bhp engine is a big step forward in economy. You can get it with an 8spd auto too.Looking at getting a V70 - I want to spend under £6k ideally under £5k, it's going to be a part time load hauler (sons Kart, my band gear) but also my occasional daily and an irregular commuter as I'm primarily home based. We have a an Ipace and an ancient SLK.
A bit of poke is appreciated. I seem to have a choice of pre or post 2007 (which seems to be a generation change) I think the pre-2007 had slightly more internal boot width which is important for getting the kart in but it's not much so I assume later is better.
I've been told they are solid and reliable.
Anything specific I need to look out for or 'they all do that sir'
Anything to walk away from.
