I finally got round to fitting new discs and pads to my 2010 V50 d2, and for some reason watched a YouTube video afterwards….

Anyway, I noticed the rear pads have a spring attached to one of the pads each side, and I didn’t take too much notice and fitted these pads to the outboard side of the disc. Now, it appears the spring attached the pad is the inboard piston side??

May be a silly question, but how essential is this as I can’t see what the spring has to do with the piston as it doesn’t touch it??

Thanks in advance for any replies as I would prefer not to have to get it apart again!

If you mean what I think you mean then the "spring" is a wear indicator or squealer, which, when the brake pad wears low, rubs against the disc making an awful noise and alerting you that the pads need changing. If the pads are otherwise identical it won't make any difference which pad holds the wear indicator as it'll be equidistant from the disc.

Thanks for the reply, it’s not the ear indicators (lots of Volvos dont have them around 2010), but it appears to be some sort of spring that goes on the piston side.

I had such a nightmare doing it I couldn’t face having it apart again, but as it’s only just been done it all came apart easy and I wasp inside in the dark this morning doing it! Luckily I had put the other side in correctly.

If you are talking about the spring clips shown in the pic for this ebay listing.

Then yes, they need to be fitted into the bore of the caliper piston.

It’s actually these springs. The ones which go in the piston bore would have been like ones I have fitted in other cars, but I just couldn’t see the point of these as they sit outside the piston. But, I was told they go piston side so that’s what I have done.
