Looks nice, we used to have the XC70 D5 in Silver. One of the best cars I have owned.

Whopper of a tip run first thing this morning with it, have to love a Volvo for doing pretty much everything you need from a car!

Great tools.

I've got one of the first on an 08 plate, does all asked of it very well but I keep thinking it won't last forever and what to change it for and ikeepcomi g back to another one, albeit a bit newer and a bit less leggy!

Looks good in that colour combo

Davie, I have had alsorts of cars over the last few years and honest nothing does family duties like a v70 or XC, I currently have a Golf R, the XC70 and a Mini JCW and almost always I grab the Volvo keys, great cars

You should try it in 3.2 V6 petrol form, positively alcoholic. I had the aforementioned petrol in a 2007 XC70 - it was a great car, with 250,000 miles, but £600 VED and 16mpg got tiresome after a while. Currently got a 2012 D5 which is proving even better.

Great choice of car OP, hope you enjoy it.

P2 D5 stuff seem to do about 783mpg if you ask most owners. I had a few but never actually worked it out pump to pump but the optimistic on board display used to think they were doing in excess of 60mpg.

The current P3 XC70 isn't actually that bad... she drives it in full Karen mode so it mostly does local stuff and the odd run and it's sat at 38mpg average and that seems pretty accurate. Pretty good given it weighs about 44tons and has done 230k now. It's a manual so maybe that helps a bit and it's the older 185bhp version.

As an aside I acquired another saffron V70R last week after I emptied the fridge of it's beer content, it's burnt a valve but currently debating fixing or moving it on. Has your name all over it sir!

This thread has spurred me on to want one….

Post 2008, AWD, Auto, either petrol or diesel
Economy not that important, nice to have 200 bhp or above
I want something sorted, reliable, decent condition, nice for it to be sub 100k miles

I can not quite get by head around if I need to be paying £7k or £14k

Links to descent ads much appreciated.

I kept a log of miles / fuel for the old v70 (used the Fuelio app), and it was returning around 46mpg fairly reliably on my commute. It said it was doing nigh on 60mpg, but we all know the obc is a big fat liar.

Only on the second tank on the xc so it's too early to call it, but 36 looks doable and the obc is not that far ahead.

As for your gay gold v70r, I'll await further details..... biggrin

To give you an idea, mine was just over 10 grand, I will run it for many years

Meanwhile I paid £6,000 18 months ago for a 2012 D5 with the facelift interior and 215bhp engine. Bought privately off eBay with 140,000 miles. Looks like it’s done 30,000.

I will be selling it at some point and am only a few miles from Wilmslow, but unfortunately I can’t sell it until my wife gets her new car. Ordered in 2021 for March 2022 delivery and we still don’t have a confirmed build week. So definitely not worth waiting for me. At this rate it’ll be June 2023. Sorry.

Conversely, I had a budget of £3k for a Volvo based borderline shed for my wife and kids to abuse and an XC was top choice given my previous rural tosser lifestyle. I looked at several P2 cars before accepting after having several, I'd had enough of their issues and stodgy mannerism plus their rear wheel to arch alignment would keep me awake at night.

An 08 plate P3 presented itself for the budget which, nigh on 3yrs ago was proper cheap. What could possibly go wrong? As it turns out... nothing. It was being sold by a sole trader who seems to cherry pick good cars and so despite its 198,500 miles and 980 mile round trip, I went and bought it spurred on by the fact it was a D5 AWD, manual, black leather and was devoid of all the fancy optional extras. Exactly what I wanted

3yrs and 30k of being abused later and it's still refusing to falter. It gets very little love being my wife's main car so it's usually getting stuff thrown in it or on it. It's been placed I didn't think possible. It's been stood on to see over things. She's rammed farm gates with it and pillars in Tesco and the kids have treated the interior like a soft play and it's hasn't put a foot wrong.

Granted, it's had tyres, rear brakes and a couple of second hand door locks since it arrived but that's it. Hasn't put a foot wrong though with the MOT looming it really does need / deserve a bit TLC... maybe even a service kit... and a wash. Zero desire to change it but when it finally becomes unviable, there's a 99% likelihood it'll be replaced with something very similar.

Similar to ours. Great spec, premium price. Service history is all. Has it had atf changed? If not it needs doing.

That's a nice looking car. Not a fan of light interiors but when it's the seats and door card inserts against black, looks lovely. Just make sure everything works!
