The wife’s xc60 mk1.5 has developed an odd squeaking noise from the rear passenger side.

Noise tends to come once the car gets over 30 and then is constantly there. It will only go when the car is braking. The noise disappeared for a day or two due to how wet it was.

Car has been into local garage a few times and they can’t see anything on the underside. They did think it was the heat shield, so tightened it up. But problem persists.

That sounds like brake pad rattle or handbrake shoe rattle. If it stops when you brake then that would point to it being brake related.

That’s great! Hopefully that will fix the issue. If it continues, the Mrs wants rid of it!

You may have misunderstood.

Braking will not fix the issue, just confirm the diagnosis if the act of braking temporarily stops the noise.

If that is the issue, the brakes will need to be inspected to find the actual cause & the cause then rectified, this could be a simple rebuild done correctly or could be several £100s of work/parts to fix, or indeed anywhere in between.

Did you ever get this problem resolved, I think I have the same issue on my 2017 (Mk1), XC60 D4 AWD intermittent rattle / squeaking from rear drivers side, stops when braking, and not heard when using accelerator.
