Morning

I am looking at one of these and was wondering if they are:

1. Reliable
2. Can take three child seats in the back??
3. Do they wear their mileage well, ie would one with over 100,000 miles on the clock be a god option?

Much appreciated to hear peoples overall experiences of them.

Which gen? I looked at the older (2015 era) ones a while back and was put off by reading a consistent theme of unreliability.

For example - this long term test by Car mag:

I would assume the newer ones are better though.

thanks man, it would be the newer one i would be after with the petrol hybrid.

Also looking at similar, I.e. a 2016/17 model with around 100k miles. Anyone driving one and can share their experience?

Particularly interested in battery life at 5 years, daily usage?

The battery warranty is 8years or 100,000 miles. Due to the fairly mild and even temperatures in the UK, batteries are expected to perform well, post warranty terms.

I think a lot of the gremlins got worked out on early XC90 T8 customers, don't see too many newer PHEV's with issues.

Presumably the battery warranty is only to the first owner? And do you know what percentage of capacity they warranty to, is it 80%?

Obviously it gives confidence that Volvo expect it to last at least 8 years in any case.

I'm starting to wonder if PHEV is the best option for us though - youngest is out of nursery next year and the school is only a walk away, so no where near as many daily short trips from that point. Diesel might be the better shout for the next few years at least.

It's for the time or distance rather than ownership. I believe they would warrant the whole thing if it was in warranty, as far as I'm aware Volvo warranties don't have diminishing returns like a Kia/Hyundai.

I'd do the math on whether to get petrol or diesel, with diesel being 25-30p a L more if you're not doing big miles it might not work out cheaper.

The maths is tricky though as understanding real world mpgs for both PHEVs and diesels is tricky.

Once youngest is in school, journeys are likely to be a couple of big (50 mile+) return journeys per month, plus the odd 5 mile trip around town per week.

Prior to that we are doing 5 mile round trips 5/7 days, plus local trips at weekends, so PHEV would probably make a lot of sense.

It would probably work out cheaper to actually just take a taxi, based on £200 a month all in motoring cost for owning a car!

Volvo have been publishing WLTP figures since 2017, so you should roughly get close to the advertised MPG on petrol or diesel maybe 10% less. PHEV's are another thing all together, if you can do most of your journeys on electric they are brilliant, my XC40 company car not using electric probably does 8 MPG less than the equivalent non-PHEV petrol.
