C70 2.0 - oil filter housing
Discussion
Can anyone tell me what sort of wrench/socket I would need to remove the oil filter housing on a 2001 C70 - engine is the 2.0 5-cylinder turbo, the 163bhp version I think. I'm presuming the filter is underneath the car, will that likely be hidden by an undertray of some sort?
The car belongs to a friend, I'm going to service it for him so I'd like to make sure I have the right tools before I start work.

OK thanks - so something like this wouldn't work?

The Sealey cup wrench is the correct piece of kit. It can also be used with a 3/8 drive torque wrench and tighten to the correct 25Nm. So many housings have been buggered by ham fisted spanner monkeys.https://www.sealey.co.uk/product/5637206197/o86mm-...
No undertray on a C70 as the subframe bracing is in the way.

Thanks for that. A bit more searching last night revealed the correct cup tool is actually an 88mm x 16-flute type, there's a Volvo special tool of that spec but I ordered a Laser one this morning. That Sealey cup is 86mm x 16-flute. Apparently the filter type changed sometime during the C70 run, old one was a combined filter/canister, new one is the separate plastic housing and filter element. I may have ordered the wrong one.No undertray on a C70 as the subframe bracing is in the way.

I'm assuming by your highly-appropriate username you know far, far more about these cars than I do Do you know what the score is with the filter sizes over the model years? My friend's car is a 2001 with the 2.0 petrol 5-pot turbo (163bhp).

As far as I am aware Volvo only had two types of filters on the petrol engines. My first Volvo was a 1969 145 and that had the spin on metal canister, through subsequent ownership of models 1800ES, 164E. 360GLT and a 1997 V40 - all had the exact same spin on filter. My 2001 V40 has the plastic housing and paper filter element as per the C70, so I would think the filters were changed sometime around 2000 - that seems to be the date when most changes took place following Ford's purchase of Volvo cars.
The 88mm housing may be on the later C70 from 2005. However, these C70 models are based on the Ford Focus platform and the only thing they share with the earlier models is the name. 2005 onwards have FoMoCo stamped on every major component. Hope this helps.

Great, many thanks for that. Hopefully the 88mm cup isn't too loose to turn the housing then, or I can wrap a bit of masking tape around it a couple of times.
